Guest guest
Sales of cigarettes fell by 11.6 per cent in July compared to the previous year, according to figures released yesterday. Cigarette sales figures for July and August show a 7.3pc drop compared to last year The decrease followed the smoking ban which came into force in England on July 1 and in Wales three months earlier. It reflects cigarette sales from shops, bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants, according to the market analysts Nielsen. Observers blamed the decline on the miserable weather because people were reluctant to go outside to smoke. Cigarette sales in August were down just 2.8 per cent compared to the previous August as the weather improved. Combined sales figures for July and August show a 7.3 per cent drop compared to the same period last year. This decrease could become more acute following an increase in the legal age for buying tobacco from 16 to 18 which came into force yesterday. A Nielsen spokesman said the " real test " for cigarette sales would be the cold winter months. She said: " Overall, we have seen from other countries which have introduced such bans an immediate dramatic effect then a levelling out of trends over the following several months.
