Guest guest
One of Spain's more bizarre local traditions — throwing live ducks into the sea to be fought over by crowds of revellers — has been banned because it causes " unnecessary suffering " to the birds. Each August hundreds of locals enter the water in Sagunto to catch the specially bred birds as they are thrown off boats during a fiesta to honour the local patron saint. But the region's Supreme Court has upheld a decision to ban the activity declaring it a " bloody spectacle " that had no cultural justification. The event often results in the ducks being torn apart by swimmers fighting over the birds, which have had their wings clipped and cannot fly.
