hi from blake in san diego:

my wife and i are ok and safe deep in urban san diego, but my folks

are out in the south east county and can see mt. miguel burning just

a few miles east from them. they are ready to leave if it gets any

closer. when i was growing up, this area was barren scrub (and a

great place to ride motorcycles, horses, etc) but now its an endless

expanse of mcmansions and strip malls. if nature has its way, it'll

be back to scrub in a few hours.

friends have been evacuated, and i had to use an asthma inhaler for

the first time in years because of the ash in the air. the air looks

clear, but if you drive a couple miles and look back at where you

came from, its a big dark cloud.

270,000 have been evacuated.

let's hope for a quick end to this second big fire in four years. we

celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary on thursday, and were married

amidst the big cedar fire of 2003.
