Guest guest
So here we are again, at the face of the most dreded holiday for vegans. It is for me anyway. We are gathering at my parent's house this year, and my boyfriend's partnts will be joining. (the first meeting of parents!) A few weeks ago mom said that I could make all the side dishes and desserts to ensure that they were vegan friendly. The only thing I would have to avoid is the turkey....sounded great! She changed her mind when everybody complained.... " I don't wanna have to eat creepy hippie food! " ....and so on. So now I am stuck....again....with the choice of either just eating salad...or slaving in my kitchen all day just so I can have a decent meal that I don't get to share with my loved ones. sucks. At least there will be beer....... I hope everybody else has a good one! And that all you kids in the U.K. realize how lucky you are! -cort
Guest guest
Cort, In the spirit of " don't ask permission, ask for forgiveness , " how would your mom react if you brought one side dish and one dessert? Then you would have good vegan food to eat (at least 2 things), no one has to eat them because presumably there will be enough cholesterol fare, but anyone brave enough to try them would be welcome to do so. You can make seasonal dishes that don't compete with whatever your mom has planned (and that are essentially vegan main dishes) -- a vegan pot pie with a sweet-potato topping, for instance, or spring rolls with grated yams, pomegranates, and peanut sauce, or vegan spanokopita. Then for dessert, pumpkin tofu cheesecake, or ginger cupcakes served with fresh persimmons and pomegranates, or persimmon chocolate chip cookies, or vegan truffles (I made the prune-based ones several years ago, and recently saw another recipe that looks good in Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World -- a modified ganache). Can you tell I've been reading cookbooks? I've done lots of baking in the past month: yeasted muffins, gingery carrot bread, pumpkin pie, vegan gluten-free brownies, soynog cupcakes, gingerbread, and oat-ginger and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. To balance all that, I just had some raw kohlrabi and carrot salad with lentils and green onions. A few weeks ago I made ginger cupcakes (secret ingredient was lemon zest), which were wonderful. One of these days I'm going to try them with orange zest and juice. I brought some spring rolls to a vegan thanksgiving a few years ago. I made up the recipe on the spot, based on what vegs I had on hand and on a few recipes I used as references, and everyone said they liked them. They're good because they're meant to be eaten cold and can be served before the main meal is ready. For a " mixed " gathering, if you want your relatives to like them, use vegs they like or that are not too unfamiliar to them, or use a sauce that is familiar to them. Or just make what you like and see if anyone else is curious enough to try them. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when I first became a vegetarian and my parents were still alive, eggplant parmigiana and vegetarian lasagna were big hits with them because they were not so different from foods they'd had before. Guest guest
Hey yarrow thanks for the suggestions, I especially like the pot pie idea. I think I will try that! (btw, vegan cupcakes take over the world is my fave! I had to buy another copy the other day because mine was so trashed with being splashed with soymilk and vinigar!) -cort , yarrow wrote: > > Cort, > In the spirit of " don't ask permission, ask for forgiveness , " how > would your mom react if you brought one side dish and one dessert? > Then you would have good vegan food to eat (at least 2 things), no > one has to eat them because presumably there will be enough > cholesterol fare, but anyone brave enough to try them would be > welcome to do so. Guest guest
we have thanksgiving with about 8 families down in mexico. my wife and i are vegetarian, as are my cousins family (2 adults and 2 kids) and my niece. we just heat one of those wacky fake turkeys to add to the table, which usually a few non-veg types try. its always gone by the end of the night, no questions asked. i think we're lucky here in southern california, where this type of diet isn't particularly heretical or extreme. regards, blake
Guest guest
That sounds really nice Blake, and I'm glad that you realize how fortuniate you are to live in a veggie friendly region. I used to live in Portland, OR and it was the BEST! It was almost more accepted to be a vegitarian than not. I live in Michigan now, and it seems like I have to explain to somone what a " vegan " is on a daily basis! (not that I mind enlightening folks.) It's odd though, I'm constantly cooking for my friends and neighbors. Allways vegan stuff. I never try a new recipie without sharing some, and everybody loves it! In fact, I can't go to band practice, work, school meetings, or practly anywhere without bringing food because everybody expects it! The strange part about it is that on Thanksgiving nobody wants anything to do with my food. They all want it to be " traditional " which is crazy because the first thanksgiving was most likely all vegan. It's also crazy because you can make almost all the side dishes vegan and they taste exactly the same. Oh well....i'm done being upset about it. I'm gonna spend the next couple weeks creating an awesome pot pie like Yarrow suggested. (I'll share the recipie when its perfected!) And I hope everybody at our holiday table ends up trying it too! hope all my vegan pals have a swell day! -cort , Blake Wilson <mbw wrote: > > we have thanksgiving with about 8 families down in mexico. my wife > and i are vegetarian, as are my cousins family (2 adults and 2 kids) > and my niece. we just heat one of those wacky fake turkeys to add to > the table, which usually a few non-veg types try. its always gone by > the end of the night, no questions asked. > > i think we're lucky here in southern california, where this type of > diet isn't particularly heretical or extreme. > > regards, > > blake >
