BERKSHIRE COUNTY, MASS. -- Where's the beef? That's one question that wasn't asked at this Thanksgiving table. It was more like, can you pass the tofurkey.

It looks a little like what's on most people's table, but it's made from Tofu and many vegans and vegetarians spend their Thanksgiving digging into the fake bird.

"The only turkey here would be alive. That's why it's a living thanksgiving. You go around and see these people. We're healthy, we're happy, there's good fellowship and nothing has to die," said event organizer Melissa Campbell.

It's called a Living Thanksgiving and about 70 people came to celebrate the vegan version of Turkey Day. Well, minus the turkey, of course.

"If we can live our lives without having to kill an animal, or without having to have an animal sustain us throughout our lives, we feel really good about that," said event organizer Don Campbell.

Not a feather was plucked to make the Thanksgiving dishes. There was vegan sushi and vegan lasagna. It looked like any other holiday spread, with one notable exception.

"Just take out the bird. You still have a full table of stuff. Vegetables, all kinds of great looking and great tasting and great healthy things," said Berkshire Vegetarian Network Coordinator Matt Kelly.

Speaking of today's feathery absence, one bird was saved yesterday after a left wing conspiracy was foiled.

"Yesterday we got lots of frantic calls about a radio station bowling a live turkey. And it turns out they were bowling a frozen turkey. It was a prank. But one turkey, named Norman, did live," said author Kathy Stevens.

Well, lucky for Norman, but he's not the only animal who's celebrating Vegan style.

Only at a Vegan Thanksgiving do you get a guest of honor on four legs; a dog named Murphy. Even he doesn't eat meat. But he came here today to celebrate the living and represent all animals who don't have a voice.

"Nothing has to die. It's all about living, respect for the earth, respect for all creatures," said Melissa Campbell.

It even made me think about stopping eating meat, at least for a day, cold turkey.
