Hi Kevin

I don't think there is a substitute that tastes similar. The only

vegan cheeses I know are Redwoods Cheezly but they are all based on

Cheddar and Mozarella styles, and the Tofutti soft cheese, which is a

very mild flavour. Is there something else you could try for a treat

like the vegan polony.

What do you have for a treat in the evening Fraggle? We've given up

treats at present - trying to lose a little weight. My treats were

usually sweet ones.

My husband and I also loved cheese before becoming

vegan. We love wine, and I know what you mean about

having difficulty finding a replacement for cheese.

In the end, we reexamined our motivation for going

vegan, and held on to those thoughts whenever the

desire for cheese came up. We did not try to use the

vegan " cheeses " as substitutes, as these just caused

disappointment. Instead, we just started avoiding

cheese completely. We would not walk by it in the

supermarket, and tried to avoid social events where it

was served. It only took one month, but the cravings

went away completely. There is an actual, physical

addition associated with cheese and some other dairy

products because of their chemical composition and

reaction with the human body chemistry. Like any

addiction, cheese can be more successfully " kicked " if

you limit your exposure to it while your body adjusts

to NOT having this addictive chemical experience. As

for the wine, try other popular pairings, such as good

bread, perhaps with olive oil, olives, high quality

nuts, fresh fruits, dark chocolate, etc. Cheeses add

fat and salt to meals, try finding others ways to

incorporate these elements, and foods will have a

similar appeal. Good luck.

The three brands of vegan " cheese " I know of are:

Tofutti: (soft cheese and processed cheese slice substitutes). These

are OK as they go (I use the original soft cheese for a very effective

cheesecake), but not a good substitute for hard cheese.

Cheezly: Hard cheeses, but mostly rather plastic in flavour. The

melting mozzarella is just about OK when grated as a pizza topping, but

it's not wonderful.

Sheese: Hard and soft cheeses. I've not tried the soft cheeses, but

the hard ones are much better than Cheezly tastewise. Still not

exactly cheese, but definitely edible. Their medium and mature

cheddars are quite reasonable. They do do a blue cheese, but I've not

tried it. Their website is http://www.buteisland.com/. Check in your

local health food shop, or you can order on line.

Cheers,

I can relate! This was my struggle, too. Here's the bad news: there is

no good vegan substitute for cheese, especially the ones you mentioned.

There are decent vegan sauces that can be used in place of a cheese

sauce, and there are vegan cheez slices that aren't bad on a sandwich.

But there isn't anything that can stand alone a vegan cheese.

My solution was to change my food so that it wasn't focused on cheese.

For instance, the " taco changes " thread we've all been having fun with

started out as a recipe for tacos that used guacamole and faux burger

crumbles to replace cheese.

It's a struggle. I love cheese, and it's only the knowledge of

environmental damage done by dairy animals and the harm done to the

animals during milk production that turned me away from it. Your own

choice may be different. It's great that you're thinking about your food

choices. Nice going!

Cheers,

Good luck Kevin! When I went vegan I had a hard time with cheese too. It was one of the only things that you could get as a vegetarian at a nice restaurant. I love to eat out with my friends and they all have discriminating tastes. Sometimes I still settle with wine, bread, and olive oil! I also enjoyed pairing wine with good cheese and fruit or something sweet for a treat. Try making some vegan pate', or a good salty pesto on some crusty bread. Well, beer counts as a treat. Are you still cold? We've been fairly mild lately, for January, but had too much rain. The last few nights have been coldish again, with a lovely full moon.
