PETA, other activist groups impacting kids: Pork Checkoff research

By Ann Bagel Storck on 1/2/2008 for Meatingplace.com

Activist groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are

affecting

children's meat-eating habits, according to research by the Pork Checkoff.

The Checkoff conducted four focus groups of 10 children ages 9 to 14 around the

United States. It also completed an online survey of 350 children in that age

bracket.

The kids were asked about their familiarity with Web sites such as petakids.com

as well as their views on vegetarianism and animal care.

More than half of all children surveyed have heard of " animal rights "

organizations. Among those who have heard of these organizations, nearly

one-fourth

report the organizations themselves have impacted their meat-eating habits.

Although PETA has a low awareness among the kids, the research found, it has a

high

impact on their meat-eating habits. Only one-third of all youth surveyed

indicated

they have heard of or visited the PETA Web site, but among those aware of PETA,

one-third reported having seen a video concerning animal care or meat

consumption.

More than half (53 percent) indicated the Web site/video had impacted their

meat-eating

habits.

" We're keeping a close eye on these activist groups and their messages, "

said Traci Rodemeyer, manager of pork information for the National Pork Board.

" We're

prepared to take action if they escalate their efforts to target children. "

Hey all, I'm new here...but had to comment on this article.

I find this hilarious. What sort of action do you think these pork

pushers are going to take if efforts are escalated by activists?

Forced-feeding kids meat?

Too funny.

I've known of Peta since I was really young and always heard good

things about them when helping animals. I really got interested in

PETA and what they knew when I was a freshman in hire school Im 18

now and a senior and I have to say I AM SO GLAD for PETA in my life

and the world. I teach my siblings also. Although they are not

vegetarian like I am, I tell them about meat and products and where

they come. They too are concerned, and I think children should know

first to help preserve their life and help influence them to be the

best they can be.

When I grew up I was brought up on lies and fantasies of how pigs

rolle din mud all day, splashing eachother and folicking about. I

grew up hearing and reaidn stories how cows were happy, and

only " happy cows produce milk " so I always thought, if cows produce

milk, they are happy. I was told, when I was younger, up until I did

my own research on the matter, that chickens would lay 12+ eggs a

day and that they were spoiled and thats why we get fat chickens and

turkies

I AM SO GLAD I KNOW OTHER WISE! I cant believe TV, books, and

elementary school taught us to believe in lies, fantasies and little

utopias!

A LOAD OF BS!!! LIES!!

They may well lobby the authorities. Don't forget it is considered to be

almost criminal to be an animal rights activist.

So here's an advertising idea for the Pork Checkoff:

" Meat -- the more you know about it, the less you want to eat it. "

Oh, wait, they already know that.
