Guest guest
Ralph Nader jumps in to the presidential race " I have decided to run for president, " Ralph Nader declared on NBC's " Meet the Press " on Sunday morning, after listing a litany of problems in America and citing polls that have found citizen discontent with the direction of the country and with both main political parties. Washington, D.C., is " corporate-occupied territory, " he said, and he accused Barack Obama of leaning " toward the corporate side. " He also had harsh words for Hillary Clinton, and harsher still for John McCain. Nader's campaign website promises to fight " corporate greed, corporate power, corporate control, " citing among other scourges polluters, agribusiness giants, nuclear power, and Big Oil. Also on his site, he calls for a carbon tax, which the other remaining presidential candidates do not support, and he declares " no to nuclear power, solar energy first. " Do you think Nader should run? Take our poll. source: Meet the Press Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance. Guest guest
Reasons why it's a good thing Nader is running again 1. He says his main reason is to focus on the issues, particularly the issues that none of the candidates are talking about. This is great because campaigns often devolve into personal attacks -- all of them seem to have entered the karlrovian zone in the past week (including the antinader rumblings!). It's rare enough for policy and political philosophy to enter the national discourse, but every 4 years we have a window of opportunity and usually it's squandered. 2. Nader is using this quadrennial window to shine some light on things that are *never* talked about. Everyone knows he's not a " real " (winnable) candidate, and that he's not doing this to focus on himself. But so much of the " normal " campaigns focus on what position will appeal to (or not offend) the largest groups of people. So much of the campaigning (when it's not about personal attacks) is about marketing. Nader's campaign is about democracy: it's saying that our government is not representative because here are a whole bunch of viewpoints that are not represented in Washington because they don't have lobbyists, and therefore congresspeople don't get paid to champion these points of view. Only someone who's outside the system, really, can point out all the systemic problems with the way things are done in DC. 2. His campaign brings people into the political process who would not otherwise become involved. Maybe they vote, whereas without his inspiration they would not have been motivated to learn more about local issues. Anyone who votes for Nader is not taking votes away from anyone else: either they would not have voted at all, or they vote for him because their vote would not make a difference anyway, because of the electoral college, timing (east-coast exit polls influencing west-coast voters), or some other reason. In 2000, Gore won Florida, which would have been the official result if *all* the counties had been recounted, instead of all the dilly-dallying about which precincts to recount and then letting the supremes call the election. 3.
