Guest guest
I do love getting all of your expertise, even though I do not write as much as I should. A very big deal here in Maryland is Old Bay Seasoning, especially on the state shellfish, the Maryland blue crab, which as far as I can tell is not all that blue. When I first moved here, some friends told me I HAD to come to a crab feed, which as far as I can tell involved: Throwing bushels of crab on a table and spreading them out. Ripping them apart. Describing the crab’s genitalia to me so that I could tell them apart. Laughing at me while I turned green and left to go throw up. Consuming these creatures by the bushel. (I spent my time finally consuming as much beer and salad as I could and looking at the sky.) The question is: These people coat these crabs in POUNDS of Old Bay Seasoning. I asked them why they didn’t just skip the crabs and pour the Old Bay right down their mouths. They laughed. Can anyone think of a way to use Old Bay Seasoning in Vegan Recipes so that I can feed my Marylander friends without smacking them in the head when they complain about “not serving crab” to them? Remember, the Maryland Blue Crab is not just a shellfish here, it’s a religion. They even put it on their French Fries (chips). For all I know, they are putting it under their arms. Does anyone have any recipes for making milk shake like drinks using soft tofu, soy milk, fruit, etc.? If I could get some chocolate taste into the mixture that would be great, too. What are some good “wraps” you can make that are Vegan? They make wraps here that usually have chicken or some other meat wrapped in tortillas. I am not sure if they have them in other countries, which shows that in many ways I am an American stereotype, for which I truly apologize. Gotta go mortgage my car to pay for gasoline. Guest guest
Hi Cynthia, I am at a loss as far as what to tell you about the Old Bay seasoning, but I do have a great milkshake recipe for you: 1 1/2 frozen bananas 3 tbsp. powdered cocoa 1 cup nonfat soymilk Maple syrup or other sweetener Add all ingredients to a drink mixer and mix until blended. Taste, adding additional sweetener or milk if desired. I make wraps with tofu. I like to take the extra firm tofu and press the water out of it, cube it and toss it with a little olive oil and seasoning, and bake it at 350 until it browns. It makes the texture a lot chewier, which really is just a personal preference of mine, but the baked-in flavor is really nice. Hey, maybe you could use Old Bay for that? (I've never had it, so I don't know what it tastes like.) Then I just wrap the tofu up in the tortilla with lettuce and whatever other veggies I have. Hope that helps! -Wendy ________________________________ > > cynthiaandtheothers > Tue, 13 May 2008 10:20:27 -0400 > Some help, here 8) (Ignore if sensitive to reading of animal cruelty) > > > I do love getting all of your expertise, even though I do not write as much as I should. > > > > 1. Guest guest
Hi Cynthia, 1. - Absolutely no idea what that seasoning is, sorry I`m Welsh, try looking up whats in the seasoning, and look for recipes on the web with similar ingredients? If its a dry seasoning thenjust put it in your fries/chips, and on your fried tofu, if its a wet (marinade) then skies the limit? 2. - Milk shakes are easy, as a lot ofmilk shake syrup/powder mixes are vegan ( well in this country), so just use sweetened soya milk and stir/shake/blend or whatever? oh and cocoa powder is vegan also to make a chocolate one (you could add a few drops of vanilla extract) 3. - Not realy up on wraps, but I know Fraggle has some ideas?. Guest guest
We make milk shakes by blending soya milk, soya ice cream and ripe bananas with some maple syrup. It is very tasty, and I have to thank Peter for that recipe. I guess you could use other fruit. I think Katy used strawberries once. Guest guest
I think it would be fine with agave - maybe even better. I think I will try that myself.
