Guest guest
black cygnet is thought to have been pelted to death with stones and life buoys at a Nottingham park. The three-month-old swan was found dead near the pond in Arnot Hill Park in Arnold on Monday night. A group of youths had been moved off the park earlier for throwing stones at the swans and ducks. Councillor Wendy Golland from Gedling Borough Council, which owns the park, appealed for anyone who witnessed the " horrific attack " to contact police. 'Closely monitored' Councillor Golland, the council's portfolio holder for leisure and youth, said: " [The attack] has devastated both staff and park users. " We are very proud of the wildlife, both in the park and on the pond and unfortunately this was the only surviving cygnet. " It was being closely monitored by our parks rangers and they had only recently reported that it was healthy and doing really well. " The cygnet's mother laid four eggs earlier in the year. One failed to hatch and two other cygnets died after a few days.

Guest guest
My mistake. This survival of the fittest, wich I have here sought to express in mechanicle terms, is that wich Mr. Darwin has called natural selection, or the presevation of favored races in the struggle of life.--- On Fri, 5/23/08, Peter <metalscarab wrote: Peter <metalscarabRe: Cygnet stoned to death Date: Friday, May 23, 2008, 7:06 AM Except that wasn't Darwin, it was Spencer. Guest guest
Hi Angelo It's one of those wonderfully common myths... it was Herbert Spencer - he applied Darwin's concepts of evolution to economics and coined the term "survival of the fittest". It's not necessarily a bad definition of Darwin's views, but it wasn't Darwin's own words :-) BB Peter - Angelo Dicks Saturday, May 24, 2008 6:02 PM Re: Cygnet stoned to death Tis human to err.
