BART, library to launch on site book lending machine

By Paul Burgarino

East County Times

Article Launched: 05/28/2008 04:32:43 PM PDT

BART riders in East County now will be able to check out a library book before

hopping on the train.

Starting this morning, riders at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station will have

access to " Library-a-Go-Go, " a book-lending machine available to Contra Costa

County Library cardholders. BART will be the first transit system in the country

to offer the service.

" We're blending the old-fashioned enjoyment of reading with 2008 technology, "

said Luna Salaver, a BART spokeswoman.

The machines will hold approximately 400 popular and best-selling titles, both

fiction and nonfiction, and will be accessible during BART hours. The machine

itself is akin to an automated teller or bridal registry, allowing people to

touch a screen and select a book, Salaver said.

Marina Partridge, the branch librarian for the Pittsburg library, said she's

been passing out library cards to BART riders this week in case they want to

take advantage of the kiosk right away.

" There's been a lot of interest from riders, many of them saying they just don't

have time to get to the library, " she said. " This should be a good opportunity

to provide another service. "

The Pittsburg/Bay Point station is the first of four Library-a-Go-Go

installations planned in Contra Costa County. Other locations include the

transit village at the BART station in Pleasant Hill, a shopping center in

Discovery Bay, and a fourth location as yet to be decided. Anyone with a Contra

Costa

County Library card will be able to check out and return books.

The program is supported by grants from the California State Library, the Bay

Area Library and Information System and Baker & Taylor, Inc.

Paul Burgarino covers Pittsburg and Bay Point. Reach him at 925-779-7164 or

What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know, it's what we know for sure

that just ain't so.

Every book in my local libraries has a bar code. Whether it's

checked in by a person or a machine, the bar code is scanned. Late

fees go on the card and are paid when you get a round tuit. At least

one of the libraries says you can pay online. So basically, all you

need is a slot with a barcode reader and a collection bin. But since

it's like a vending machine, I guess each book goes to an assigned

slot (like a hotel for books) so the machine can retrieve them.

BART, library to launch on site book lending machineBy Paul BurgarinoEast County TimesArticle Launched: 05/28/2008 04:32:43 PM PDTBART riders in East County now will be able to check out a library book before hopping on the train. Starting this morning, riders at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station will have access to "Library-a-Go- Go," a book-lending machine available to Contra Costa County Library cardholders. BART will be the first transit system in the country to offer the service."We're blending the old-fashioned enjoyment of reading with 2008 technology," said Luna Salaver, a BART spokeswoman. The machines will hold approximately 400 popular and best-selling titles, both fiction and nonfiction, and will be accessible during BART hours. The machine itself is akin to an automated teller or bridal registry, allowing people to touch a screen and select a book, Salaver said.Marina Partridge, the branch

librarian for the Pittsburg library, said she's been passing out library cards to BART riders this week in case they want to take advantage of the kiosk right away."There's been a lot of interest from riders, many of them saying they just don't have time to get to the library," she said. "This should be a good opportunity to provide another service."The Pittsburg/Bay Point station is the first of four Library-a-Go- Go installations planned in Contra Costa County. Other locations include the transit village at the BART station in Pleasant Hill, a shopping center in Discovery Bay, and a fourth location as yet to be decided. Anyone with a Contra Costa County Library card will be able to check out and return books. The program is supported by grants from the California State Library, the Bay Area Library and Information System and Baker & Taylor, Inc.Paul Burgarino covers Pittsburg and Bay Point. Reach him at
