Eat Vegan Pizza & Fun(d)raiser

We had another full-house for our April tour to Animal Place, where we heard first-hand some startling news: Animal Place is moving, from their over-grazed, water scarce 60-acre sanctuary in Vacaville to 590 acres of rolling pastures in the California foothills of Grass Valley. Room to grow means more rescues, more outreach, more education. And it's about 10 degrees cooler, too -- we needed that on the day of our tour!

You can find some photos of the most recent Animal Place tour in our photo gallery

We want to do more than hope Animal Place raises their necessary funds. We want to HELP them raise the necessary funds.

1) BAVeg pledges $500 to Animal Place if you help us raise at least that amount with your own donation.

2) Join us on June 17th for vegan pizza party fun(d)raiser for Animal Place in Berkeley.

Instead of merely wishing more people would go veg, please join Bay Area Vegetarians as we work to make it happen by distributing free vegan iinformation & recipes to the general (non-veg) public!

It's easier than you think it is, and incredibly rewarding. It's empowering to know we have the ability to save lives by encouraging people to go veg.

We need a few hours of your help this summer to distribute veg info to our local community. Leafleting opportunities include Haight Street Fair, Pride and Stern Grove concert series.

"What about Cage-Free eggs?"

On the right, the smell of searing chicken flesh at an outdoor grill. On the left, a life-size replica of a battery cage crammed with chickens at the BAVeg booth.

According to Viva!USA, "every day, 23 million chickens are killed in the U.S. for food--that's 269 deaths per second." Hoping to decrease that mind-boggling number, BAVeg accepted an invitation to have an info booth at the Maker Faire at the San Mateo County Expo.

The inquisitive and open-minded visited our booth for vegan recipes, had their questions answered about cage-free eggs, browsed vegan cookbooks, picked up a variety of informative leaflets, and, of course, the latest updates about local veg information & events.

But to answer that question often posed to us, "what about cage free eggs?"

Well, the hens typically live in a big shed, and still may not have access to the outdoors. However, they can walk, spread their wings and lay their eggs in nests. Yes, this is better than living crammed in a cage. Yet, remember, cage-free means that hens are still debeaked and prematurely killed to prevent decreasing profits from egg-laying productivity. And, more than 200 million male chicks are killed every year because they can't lay eggs and they aren't profitable enough to raise for their flesh.

Some aren't ready to hear the hard truth about where eggs come from and their true cost, so they avoid our booth. While others thank us for being a voice for the animals and sympathize that we're across from the bbq'ing chicken.

"The Goode Family" is a new animated comedy series about a vegan family of do-gooders. It's too early to tell whether vegans (and our attitudes and philosophy) will become food for serious discussion or fodder for cheap laughs. In the clip, Dad is described as "an over-educated, academic liberal" and Mom, wearing a "Meat is Murder" tee, "knows everyone has a right to their own opinion but she just can't stand it". It's on ABC this fall. Check out the preview clip.

NBC News Coverage: Sadly, Bay Area animal shelters kill more cats and dogs than are placed in homes. Please, if you have room in your home & heart, adopt an animal from a shelter. If you already have animals, please spay/neuter. There are also low-cost (as well as free) spay/neuter programs available to help. The NBC news story is available online.

Vegan Food Party

On June 21st, join us for a Japanese-theme Vegan Food Party & sushi demonstration in Menlo Park. Our hostess, Cay has been making her own vegan sushi and teaching people how for over 15 years so come benefit from her expertise. This is a kid-friendly event, too.

On July 4th, it's back to Montara State Beach for our Sand-n-Surf Vegan Food Party. This is a fun event to celebrate Independence Day with others who enjoy vegan foods.

Please see the event calendar for more details and to RSVP. If you'd like to organize a Vegan Food Party in your home or at your favorite park, please review our volunteer/event host information. The months of August and October are open.

Seed, a new vegan restaurant in the Santa Rosa, opened in early May, offering cooked and raw selections, and The Usual Suspects Cafe, a vegetarian diner with emphasis on vegan foods, just opened in SF. There are now 11 vegetarian restaurants in the North Bay and over 20 in SF alone. Any volunteers to host a Veganauts mission to these new destinations?
