A LEADING animal rights activist will give $25,000 to any person who can come up with a viable way to end factory farming in Australia.

The outspoken former corporate heavyweight Brian Sherman, the founder of animal rights group Voiceless, announced the incentive as part of a new round of grants for projects that improve the lives of Australian animals.

Speaking at the Vegan Expo at Sydney's Wharf 8 yesterday, Mr Sherman said the projects could include advertising or awareness campaigns, academic reports, education and lobbying to pressure industry and government to ban intensive piggeries, battery hens, broiler chickens and feedlots.

Mr Sherman said the group has already given away $800,000 since 2004 to non-profit groups, councils and universities. He said he expects to hand out at least $1 million in grants this year.

Factory farming was the main source of suffering for animals in Australia, he said.

"The bulk of people in Australia have no idea what happens to their meat before it gets to their plate," he said. "If people reduce their consumption of meat it will have an impact on the lives of animals and also have a positive impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

The expo also featured new designs in eco-friendly clothing.

Sydney fashion designer Jazmin Martin has launched her own range of vegan clothes. Her label, Kemp Clothing, shuns leather, wool and silk for items made with hemp, bamboo, organic cotton and nettle.

"I found that vegan and eco-friendly clothing is often dated and unattractive," she said. "My philosophy is you shouldn't have to sacrifice style to do the right thing by the environment."

The 25-year-old from Collaroy plans to sell her Kemp line through retailers and online.

"People don't realise they're contributing to landfill when they buy cheap, synthetic, designer knock-offs that are usually disposed of after one season and unable to decompose," she said.Source: The Sun-Herald
