As owners of Horizons in Philly's Bella Vista section, these self proclaimed "foodies" of the vegetarian persuasion aim to add substance to the vegan variety."We don't want steamed vegetables, we don't want stir fry. We want a really good, satisfying plate of food," said Landou. Since no animal products are used in vegan cuisine, Landou believes in filling the void with flavor, texture and contrast. Featured menu items include the Vietnamese Bruschetta appetizer which includes lemon grass braised tofu on a French baguette served with cilantro mint relish. For a more hearty helping, try the grilled seitan. The wheat gluten product has a close consistency to meat."It's probably the closest thing a vegan can get to meat and potatoes," explained Landou. Dessert items include a Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brulee. "It's one of those vegan treats that you think, is this really vegan? How did they do this? So, it's one of my favorites," said Jacoby. The menu may be meat-free, but the guests certainly are not. According to Landou, almost 85-percent of restaurant goers are meat eaters. "Some come with a raised eyebrow and it's the greatest satisfaction in the world to be able to just watch them enjoying the meal." In addition to owning their restaurant, Rich Landou and Kate Jacoby have also penned two vegan cook books. To learn more, Peter vv Sent from Mail. A Smarter Email.
