Guest guest
welp, we finally made it out to Souley Vegan out here in Oakland they opened a restaurant downtown a couple months ago, and we just haven't found the gumption to head on over (even if it is a whoppin mile from our haus) weeeellll... um, i can sorta see why i waited. soul food just really hasn't been my thing. they started out selling at the Grand Lake Farmers Market (another place i never get to, as i'm a temescal and Berkeley farmer's market boi) we've heard nuthin but rave reviews about there food, both from the farmers market, and the new locale *shrug* smallish sorta place. it really reminds me places my babchia took me a billion years ago... read, spartan 6 tables, yellow one, one cooler with nothing in it, curtain wall cutting off the kitchen. blues and soul playing over the stereo there were only two couples there when we got there, but 9 more folks showed up while we were eating, and two more for pick up, so i guess they do ok business. the food... i dunno..i guess its just not my thing i had the crispy tofu, collared greens, and " mac and cheese " ... rebecca had the bbq tofu, potato salad, and collared greens i guess the crispy tofu was supposed to look like catfish, it was heavily battered, but light inside..sorta a fillet, i guess..it was ok, but the tofu really didn't have much flavor... the mac and cheese (they use nutritional yeast for the cheese) was..ok..i've never really liked this dish, it just came with the platter..i gave most of it to rebecca the collareds..bitter and too salty..i like the ones i make at home the potato salad was pretty good... the bbq tofu was better then mine...i liked the texture much much better. the sauce was ok i guess... all in all, i guess i'm just missing out on the attraction... oh, and had a strawberry juice, which i didn't realize was made with a heap of ginger when i ordered it...that was sorta a surprise hahahahahahahahaha fraggle “We now know that a neo-conservative is an arsonist who sets the house on fire and six years later boasts that no one can put it out.†- Bill Moyers
