Hi,I've posted here before, a while ago. I'm a year into vet school, which is a miserable place for a vegan to be. The industry is a sad place for animal lovers, counterintuitive, yes. I've been stuck on Grand Cayman for the past year for school, but I just received a transfer offer to Illinois. I'm excited to be moving back to a college town. I hope they will have a vegan or at least vegetarian community of some type in the Champaign/ Urbana area. Anyone on this list from the central Illinois area?I like this group. Being in school, I often do not have time to read all the posts in depth, but just seeing it in my mail box reminds me that there are other vegans in the world. I am lonely and isolated here, but you guys remind me that I am not as alone as I feel.Thank you for being out

there. If any vegans are looking for a vacation spot in the next month, we'll be on this island until Aug 15th and have a free room. Plus, we know all the vegan places to eat. Have a great day.~Faith

I find this interesting. I have some friends studying vet'nry at Uni, and it's been quite a surprise how they relate to animals. It seems that the course encourages them to look at animals as commodities - mostly related to farming practices. It doesn't seem to bother them at all that they are required to kill perfectly healthy animals for reasons of profit....

Is it the same sort of thing in the US?

The veterinary industry was born intertwined with the livestock and horse use industries, so I suppose the way "we" view animals is not that surprising. There are a growing number of veterinarians in the US that support animal rights, and a good majority that are at least in favor of animal welfare. There are many alternative teaching methods popping up that spare animals from unnecessary pain and death in the name of learning. I'm pleased with the progress that has been made. That said, a large part of what motivates me to continue on in the face of so much unpleasantness is a desire to encourage change from within the industry. I think that humans and animals can benefit from expanding the current popular view of animals as objects of use.My husband and I want to open or work with a livestock rescue and shelter that can

educate the community about these wonderful animals. We're excited about our path, but the road there is trying at best. :) On another note, I also love Dr. Who! Is that a vegan thing? I also love yoga, snorkeling, painting, and anything nature. Peace!~Faith

I think it's just very popular at the moment. It's quite odd for me - I was a Dr Who fan when the BBC were trying to kill it off in the mid to late 1980s, so to be a Dr Who fan, and suddenly find that it's considered quite normal behaviour came as quite a shock when the new series did so well :-)

Hi Faith

Sounds like a good plan to me, and I wish you luck with it.

I don't know about Doctor Who and vegans, but most Pagans seem to love Star Trek.

I glad you like our group - thanks :-) Don't be lonely any longer, chat to us instead. There is always someone here to answer.

Hi Peter,

My husband has loved Dr Who since the 80's. His favorite Dr. was Tom

Baker. He only recently introduced me to the series, and I quite

enjoy it.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, two questions:

What does " BB " mean when people are signing off? Bye bye?

How do I make my return posts look like the others? Reply to group?

Reply via web post? I feel like I'm doing it wrong.

Thanks.

Hey Jo,

I would chat more, but I get shy in groups. :) I feel like I don't

want to say something stupid. I like people, yet was always the kid

getting picked on in school.

Ultimately, I really look forward to moving out of the US, but for the

time being, the US is a huge improvement over our current " home. " I

am confident that we (husband and I) will find a few other vegans to

hang out with in a college town, which are are definitely looking

forward to. These chat groups are fun, but potlucks are a bit

difficult.

Hi Faith

Don't worry too much that you might say something silly - I'm sure we

all do from time to time :-) Sometimes we get away with it (we

think), sometimes we get ribbed about it, and sometimes picked up on

it - but basically it is a friendly group and it all irons out.

Peter VV have our differences on occasion, but I count him as an

email friend (just waiting for the rude reply now :-) )

School can be a nasty place, and yet it's one of the only times you

have no say in whether you go or not!!!

I always have good intentions for potlucks but don't seem to find the

time to prepare anything exciting. I usually end up taking hummous

and crudites with a French loaf, or something similar. One day I

will prepare in advance (maybe when I am retired).

I used to like Tom Baker - but re-watching the old ones, I actually prefer

Patrick Troughton and Peter Davison nowadays....

I use it to mean " Bright Blessings " , but others may use it differently! I do

have a friend who plays with it a bit, and signs off with things like " bald

badgers " , " baked beans " , etc. :-)

Yep - and now there's a whole load of popular Dr Who internet groups out there, where 90% of the members don't even know who Tom Baker is... let alone William Hartnell!

Ah, they're young in the ways of the Force. They will get there - I

think with last season's finale (OMG the Master *squee*) and this

season (OMG UNIT *more squee*) and this season's finale, which I had

rudely spoilered to me by the RT but I won't say JIC someone hasn't

heard yet... Anyway, the old-school fan reaction to those was huge and

I think made a lot of the younger fans sit up and take notice. And

hopefully with the project to animate the " lost " episodes there will

be enough interest to get them watching the old series. And then

auntie beeb can release a " complete 1-7 box set " of all the episodes

ever, and I'll never leave the sofa ever again.

Incidentally, it was the UNIT episodes this season that finally

brought me round to rating the series as " proper " Doctor Who. Never

mind Torchwood, UNIT is where *my* Doctor is.

Fraggle,

I'm replying through my email, although, if I hit " reply via web post "

then it brings me to the website. I think it may be right now, but

I'm still not sure. My husband is a sys admin, and I find this

convenience has made me more technophobic than ever. I just pester

him when I can't figure things out, but he doesn't play around with

email groups, so this is a question he can't answer.

It is good to see some old references coming in... but I do wish they would

do a series or two without Daleks!

> And

> hopefully with the project to animate the " lost " episodes there will

Yes, although having seen the bits on the Guardian website, I can't say the

fan animation project is particularly good - all the characters look like

they're about to wet themselves! Sadly the BBC don't feel that the profit

margin justifies doing any more animations, although I am aware that there's

currently another fan project to animate which does look quite a bit better

in quality from the few samples I've seen. It's a shame that one didn't hit

the headlines.

> And then

I believe it would take a solid 14 days of watching non stop to get through

every episode at one sitting! I've worked my way through from start to

finish once, and it took me a little under 2 years!

It is nice to see UNIT back properly... I do hope that they'll have a guest

appearance by the Brigadier at some point :-)

Tom Baker is definately up ther for me, together with David Tennant. His new assistant knocks socks off Billy Piper, she was pretty one dimensional compared to the new one IMO.

Wow. Yours is a DECIDEDLY minority opinion. I've heard a LOT of whining about Donna this season from a good deal of people, and lots of cheers whenever Rose comes on.

Actually...the amount that much of the fandom obsesses over Rose scares me. Love the char, hate most of her fanbase.

I feel like I'm doing it wrong.Thanks.~Faith@gro ups.com, "Peter" <metalscarab@ ...> wrote:>> Hi Faith> > > On another note, I also love Dr. Who! It's quite odd for me- I was a Dr Who fan when the BBC were trying to kill it off in themid to late 1980s, so to be a Dr Who fan, and suddenly

find that it'sconsidered quite normal behaviour came as quite a shock when the newseries did so well :-)> > BB> Peter>

I was a bit sceptical when I heard Catherine Tate was going to be on Dr Who, especially as her comic talents leave a lot to be desired IMO, but she pulls it off brilliantly, and her cherector is a breath of fresh air, none of the girly girly stuff so often written for previous companions, all running behind the Dr, swooning at him all the time. I have seen Billy Piper in other things and just dont think a lot of her acting per se.

Tom Baker is definately up ther for me, together with David Tennant. His new assistant knocks socks off Billy Piper, she was pretty one dimensional compared to the new one IMO.
