Guest guest
Hi I am new to your list thank you for letting me join. I am not a vegan yet, though I am seeking information, and have many questions. I tried to go vegatarian last year, but I got really annemic and sick. Is there a way to avoid this if I am going to try this again ? I am a mommie of 6 kids, I can't be passing out lol Also, with the whole milk issue... if you have a 6 week old baby on formula.. how can one be vegan. I have a baby who is on formula, and I am not sure how to justify it if I am going to go vegan. I also have an 18 mo who is on whole milk. What do vegans do for their babies ?? I also wanted to add that I was inspired to think again about becoming vegan due to the tv show 30 days where they took a hunter from NC and put him in a vegan family. I have more questions but I won't overwelm, I just wanted to say thanks in advance for answering my questions. Rene' Toro

Guest guest
I have some non kid questions to, does anyone feel limited when going out places where to eat. We are big amusement park people. We love disneyland.. etc.. how would you be able to eat there if you can not bring foods into the parks ???? Does anyone feel limited when going out with friends who are not vegan, such as going out to eat in groups. How can you find something ? What about traveling ? Is anyone here someone who used to not be vegan/veg ??? How did you change ? How did you stop the want for wanting to eat meat ? Was it very hard. When I tried it last year, it was hard at first, then I got sick, and weak, so I had to stop. Going out to bbqs with friends, and resteraunts I found to be very hard for me. I also wanted to know how making the change impacted your food bills. When I was trying to be veg, I noticed it costs a lot more to cook that way. How can you budget and still be able to be vegan/ veg. :)Thanks !!Rene in CA Rene' Toro --- On Fri, 6/27/08, fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote: fraggle <EBbrewpunxRe: Hi I am new, and I have many questions... Guest guest
Hi and welcome, dont think you had a well balanced vegetarian diet to get anemic and sick?, eat plenty of greens, and if needs be take a suppliment. My kids are vegie ( not vegan ) from birth, and unfortunately were given formula, and as vegies drink moo juice, but now they are 11 and 14 ( two girls, the oldest is as tall as me!), and are rarely ill. Guest guest
yea prob I didn't. the rest of my family isn't veg. So I would just eat bags of salad.. or if they had corn let's say, with diner, I would eat a bowl of that.... I ate a lot of ritz lol. I need to learn how to cook, and how to be healthy when making the choice, but it is hard when you don't have everyone on board with ya. What is moo juice ? Guest guest
Me either, but I do get annemic very easy whether I am trying or not trying to be veg. It just seems to subside when I take iron pills, but those make me not be able to go potty lol.. so I was just going back to meat eating with red meats, and that stopped it. Then I got sick from that, because I have no galbladder due to galstones, from ... eating red meat.. so.. lol so I felt like I couldn't win no matter what I did. I need to be able to find the way to be veg, or vegan and not get sick..... that is why I joined this list. Seemed like a great place to get some information. Guest guest
My friends all have different diets and some of them are also restricted. They have been nothing but supportive and some even go out of their way to cook stuff I can eat. When we go out we find something we can all eat at. Traveling is easy and when in doubt, I pack Luna bars. Chocolate peppermint stick is my fav. Meat made me sick to begin with, so I don't miss it. I find that Boca and veggie meats taste better to me. *shrugs* I've never gotten sick nor weak. If you're a " starchitarian " , however, you CAN get sick. Eat a balanced diet. Honestly, I spend less money now. Cook enough to have leftovers, learn the joys of stir frys, and get bagged frozen veggies. When I go to BBQs I bring veggie burgers I can eat. Restaurants I check the menu in advance and make sure I order something that is definitely vegan. Guest guest
whoa there, quite a lot of questions! heh heh ok, while i'm not a big amusement park person (frak, i haven't been to the land of Mickey in over a decade), i can hopefully give a few pointers the thing is, being vegan means asking questions, and being aware of what goes into food, AND how most people in the US (and lotsa europe) view what constitutes food and cooking i remember the last time we went to disneyland, we basically didin't eat. it was easier for us, and we ate ahead of time. now, after talking with various ppl over the years that of course there are options. the vegan diet is much more well known, so it just takes perseverance. (sic) i know the bayou wotever place, blue bayou? wotever, the restaurant in the pirates of the caribbean ride, it has a portbello sandwich/burger plate. several places have veggie burgers (tho whether they are vegan or not i don't know) you can get steamed veggies several places, and of course there always fruit and salad bar. there's also a japanese restaurant, veggie sushi its always wise to plan ahead. call the amusement parks customer service line. remember, they want you as their customer, and should be able to give you some pointers,...then again, you might get stuck with the "well, you can have the chicken sandwich..." fraggle Rene From Cali Jun 27, 2008 3:19 PM Re: Hi I am new, and I have many questions... Guest guest
traveling.... again, plan ahead i think we in the US put waaaaaay to much emphasis on going to restaurants when we travel. if i'm going out of town, one of the first things i look for (after beer places...i have my vices) is a health food/supermarket type store..is there a whole foods? wild oats? small local health food store? once that is settled, you know you have a fall back. you can always eat fruit, make sandwiches, make a picnic out of it! most folks seem to go "fast food", whether are traveling or not. i understand its easier...but oh bacchus...fast food scares me..it's scared me since before i went vegan.. oh, and for the record, certainly have not been vegan my entire life....hahahahahaha...vegetarian since '89, vegan since '93...beofre that, you prolly don't wanna know.... Guest guest
food bills well...stay away from the processed "vegan" foods if you can.... they always cost more. it of course is easy to reach for the vegan burgers and cook em up in 20 seconds, and its comforting i guess. just like fast food.... but...sit back for a moment sitting back yet? vegan food is EVERY VEGETABLE, FRUIT, GRAIN, NUT out there...don't be afraid to experiment. there are innumerable dishes out there. ask folks what there fave dishes are. preruse a few cookbooks and get some tips. and, if poverty is still an issue( i sooo know what that is!), pasta and rice are still cheap....quick too. add a few veggies...sauce...voila... but..again...don't be afraid to try new things, and explore! hope that helps cheers fraggle Rene From Cali Jun 27, 2008 3:19 PM Re: Hi I am new, and I have many questions... Guest guest
luckily most of my friends (whom i call my family) are more then understanding. BBQ's have two grills (one for the carnies, one for the veggies). ppl always try and pick restaurants that have something vegan on the menu for get togethers. parties always have vegan dishes. if they go somewhere like "dead flesh junction", well, then i don't go. there are always plenty more opportunities to hang out with my friends. Rene' Toro Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance. Guest guest
Iron-rich foods from a quick Google-search: # beans, including kidney, lima, navy, black, pinto, soy beans, and lentils# iron fortified whole grains, including cereals, breads, rice, and pasta# greens, including collard greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, and turnip greens # tofu# vegetables, including broccoli, swiss chard, asparagus, parsley, watercress, brussel sprouts# blackstrap molasses# nuts# dried fruits, such as raisins, prunes, dates and apricots Always, always, always research a diet thoroughly before going on it. I have a food diary and discovered that I eat more than the recommended daily supply of protein and calcium--and iron's actually not all that bad given I don't take any supplements. I know a bit about eating for a gallbladder, so get low fat tofu, et cetera. So I would just eat bags of salad.. or if they had corn let's say, with diner, I would eat a bowl of that.... I ate a lot of ritz lol. Guest guest
Try making smoothies. It's convenient to make for just one, and you can add fruits, nuts and greens that give you almost every vitamin you need for the whole day in just one smoothie. So you will have good energy and less guilt when you aren't so healthy the rest of the day. You can even experiment with silken tofu. :)fraggle <EBbrewpunx Sent: Friday, June 27, 2008 2:52:00 PMRe: Hi I am new, and I have many questions... moo juice...cow milk Rene From Cali Jun 27, 2008 3:27 PM @gro ups.com Re: Hi I am new, and I have many questions... yea prob I didn't. the rest of my family isn't veg. Guest guest
My children have been vegatarian from birth, we do not drink mil thoughYou can make home made nut milk or buy it, smoothies, soy milk, and there are many other choices. My children have always taken a multivitamin and have no health issues related to diet. The truth is the human body only needs milk the first two years of life. (preferably mothers milk)After this the body can not process it correctly. All of my children will tell you their favorite drink is water. Guest guest
My dad had a heart attack and had a blockage recently, his dad died of cancer, his sister died of cancer, his mom had diabetes, my mom's mom had cancer that went into remission and my mom's dad also had diabetes. Rene' Toro -- Gymbo in Texas " We're going to go fast for Bobby! Guest guest
My kids have hardly ever taken suppliments, very rarely maybe once or twice in their 14 years. They certainly seem a lot healthier than their peers. But, they do have the moo juice on cereal, eat dairy spreads and eggs in stuff. My wife is a carnie, so met her half way , would have prered that they were vegan though. Peter vv Heather Farlow <farjoy2 Sent: Friday, 27 June, 2008 9:06:33 PMRe: Hi I am new, and I have many questions...
