How does your garden grow?

As you all know, I'm not that good at growing veggies. However, my

tomatoes have done extremely well, in spite of the worry I had earlier

on. I have peppers (last year they died on me). I've had rocket,

nasturtiums, and beans. The herbs have been so so, not as good as

usual, but my Bay tree is coming along nicely.

Why can't I grow Rosemary? Over the years I have bought five plants,

some tiny, some about a foot high, and they have all died on me. One

of my witchy friends who is a gardener and florist gave me a cutting,

ready-potted, for Beltane. I really thought that would do well, and

it looked fine for seven weeks - then just died!

What is doing well in your garden at present?

i've got beans coming out of my ears...green string beans, soybeans, purple and yellow wax beans, scarlet runner beans...

beans just took over all the raised beds. guess its good for the soil tho

collareds are starting to flower, so time to harvest them all out i guess, and get ready for the next wotever i'm going to plant.

zucchinis and cucumbers are doing nicely

peppers got overwhelmed by the onslaught of the beans, and the fruit they did produce got mostly eaten by some lil passerby

still getting carrots...

blackberries are fading...still getting em, but birds and squirrels definately get to em before i do, just not enough to go around i guess!

Hi Fraggle

You've done a lot better than me. The blackberries here seem quite tart this year.

Rosemary like most herbs, thrives on poor soil, realy good drainage, and a lot of sun , but will tolerate a bit of shade. If you ticked all those boxes then I just dont know?

It was traditionally grown in gardens to encourage wealth apparently?

Blackberries are still going strong. I got a few yards of tulle to

protect them from birds and, more importantly, bird poop. (Haven't

used bird netting since a little bird got caught in another

gardener's rolled-up bird netting and it took lots of work to cut the

netting and set beak, wings, and feet free while the bird was

squirming in my hand.)

Tomatoes are finally starting to produce, though the cherry tomatoes

are still not doing much -- everything got stunted this year. I'm

going to have to save seeds, because my favorite one this year was

mislabeled.

Romano beans have started producing.

Herbs are doing well, except for the 2-inch basil plants. I have

sage, lemon balm, chocolate and moroccan mint, lemon verbena,

rosemary, scented geraniums, echinacea, garlic chives, yerba buena,

mugwort, hummingbird sage, oregano, thymes, etc.

Perennial kales are breaking branches off in the wind, even though

they're on a trellis. One of them is 7-8 ft. high. Russian kales are

sprouting all over.

Finally harvested the rest of the potatoes last week, and planted the

green and too-small ones.

Purple sprouting broccoli and purple peacock broccoli are taking

over. They were all cut way back in the spring, and have flourished.

Harvested big bunches of lavender a couple weeks ago and gave most of it away.

Thanks. I do have a sunny spot under the eaves - so will have another

go at planting one there.

Sadly I don't think i'm that great either! lol

I have had a lot of good crops but my tomatoes are just starting to

form and the VERY wet weather we've had has killed off half the

plants - think i planted them too close and they've not been drying

off in between showers. :(

The lovely cabbage butterfly has left her babies to eat my salad and

the rain has seen off the rest.. any tips on disouraging them?

really don't want to kill them now as they must be nearly grown.

I do still have french beans on the go, corgette plant - which has

amazed me with 8 corgettes so far, pumpkin, butternut squash,

cucumber, baby sweetcorn still on the go..

I LOVE my veggie patch and am planning onions, garlic and some up to

xmas potatoes soon - 2nds that if covered will 'sometimes' make it

to xmas day! :)

We have fruit bushes too but they're newly planted, only the

blueberry did well this year.
