California Homeless Animals At Risk

California Legislative Alert

Dear Friend of Animals,

California shelters are required to hold and make animals available for adoption

before killing them. But now, California's shelter holding periods for homeless

animals are under attack. Funding for them is not in the state budget. Failure

to

fully fund the holding periods may well result in many shelters¢ rolling back

the

clock to the time that California's holding period for animals was 72 hours

from the time of impound. Only one state will have a shorter holding period than

California.

We are forwarding an alert

from The League of Humane Voters because we agree that defunding of the holding

periods in California will be used as a death sentence for homeless animals.

That

is why we are joining them in asking that all dog and cat lovers and rescue

groups

make their voices heard on this very important issue, especially if you live or

rescue animals in California.

The Governor (and Legislature) attempted to fully defund the holding periods in

the past but relented only after hearing from pet lovers around the state. He

backed

off once and I believe he can be convinced to do so again. In addition,

according

to The League of Humane Voters: Two legislators seem to be the key to changes in

the budget. It is important that they hear from as many people as possible to

restore

funding for compliance with the holding periods.

These are their contact numbers:

Senator Denise Ducheny

Telephone Number: (916) 651-4103

Fax Number: (916) 323-8386

State Senate Don Perata

Telephone Number:(916) 651-4009

Fax Number: (916) 327-1997

If you are from California, please contact them in addition to contacting the

Governor

and your own legislators. To find out who they are and how to reach them, see

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first

thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.
