Guest guest
Well, folks. I got a double mastectomy scheduled for this Friday, Sept. 12. Most of you know I have had a lot of experience with cancer. I was talking with the intake nurse last night who goes over things with you before you go to the hospital. WHAT A HARD TIME SHE HAD WITH THE CONCEPT OF “VEGAN”. I explained, slowly, patiently, about no animal products in diet or daily use. “Well, is that a religious choice?” she asked. WHAT THE CRAP DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING? No, I said, it is a philosophical choice. “Oh, then, it’s personal,” she replied. HUH? Anyway, she said that they would probably just give me “broth” at first. I explained that broth was in fact an animal product. “Jello’s fine, right?” she asked. Crap. Now I had to enlighten this person about fish bladder or isinglass or something. By now, she was convinced I’m crazy. “Eggs? Chicken?” she asked. Um, no. She told me that I would PROBABLY BE BETTER OFF IF I BROUGHT MY OWN FOOD TO THE HOSPITAL. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHsnortsnortsnortdroolcoughcoughchokechokegaspgaspdrool… So, gang, what do I pack for my 2 day camping trip to the hospital? I cannot take anything that needs refrigeration. They’ve got to have fruit there, right? I finally told her to just send up a banana or something and I would be fine. She WANTS ME TO BRING MY OWN FOOD. <snort> So, folks, help me out here. What would you take on a 2 day hospital picnic where you can neither keep something cool nor heat something up? Guest guest
Almond butter. Definitely almond butter! Peanut butter too. And some type of carb to put it on (apples, pita, crackers). Some carrots and broccoli. Lots of fruit. Lots of water. You could also bring some soy protein powder and add it to the juice they have. You probably aren't going to feel like eating much at least. : ( I hope it all goes well. Maggie
Guest guest
fruit sounds good. how about soup or ramen, something you can heat in a microwave or add hotwater to? oatmeal? trail mix? how much will you be able to eat? how settled do you think your system will be? will medicines/treatment/chemo react with anything? the hospital should be able to give you fruit, but anything else i'd be wary of. can you talk to the hospital cafetaria or kitchen ahead of time? can anyone bring you food? good luck and be well!!!!!!!!! fraggle CKG Sep 10, 2008 12:33 PM Need some suggestions... Guest guest
Firstly, totally off topic but good luck for the op, and hope all goes well. My mum had a mastectomy when i was young, my sister and I have annual screening. I can't believe the hospital are being so horrible! If it was religious or due to allergies i wonder how they'd handle it. I'm really new to 'trying' to be vegan.. am changing things gradually but am further down the road than I thought i'd be by now - finding it easier than i thought. I love falafels with salad, so perhaps you could have those? Bagels ? with jam - maybe they could 'stretch' to toasting a bagel for you. Long life rice/soya milk - ok it'd be a bit warm - with cereal i'm assuming they'd have cornflakes or something thats vegan without actually knowing it. maybe prepare porridge before you go that they could warm for you? other than that a BIG Fruit basket with carrots and bits you can nibble on raw. again totally shocked they are being so horrible. Good luck ((hugs)) , " CKG " <cynthiaandtheothers wrote: > > Well, folks. I got a double mastectomy scheduled for this Friday, Sept. 12. > Most of you know I have had a lot of experience with cancer. Guest guest
Doesnt this hospital have a dietitian? If they can manage hot water, you can get dhydrated stuff...noodles...packet soups type of things? Fruit goes without saying, so does nuts would they be able to heat up tinned food for you? I realy hope it goes as well as can be expected for you. Peter vv CKG <cynthiaandtheothers Sent: Wednesday, 10 September, 2008 8:33:36 PM Need some suggestions... Well, folks. Guest guest
How about those single-serving applesauce/vegan pudding/etc. cups that are sold for lunches? Sometimes you can also find soymilk in small containers. Or bring a can opener and a few cans of whatever looks appealing. Can you ask if you will be able to use the small fridge at the nurses' station (there usually is one) for one item at a time? Then you could bring 1-liter containers of soymilk, rice milk, veggie broth, shelf-stable soups, etc. Or you can just bring the 1-liter containers and (I'm assuming you'll be encouraged to take lots of liquids) consume each one over 2-3 hours or so. I'd bring something like 3 containers each of veggie broth and soup, 1 or 2 of soy/rice milk, and a couple of some juices you like. Also several pieces of fresh fruit. If you have the energy, do call the dietitian at the hospital to find out if they can provide any food at all for you. IIRC, fresh fruit was not on the menu when my mom was in the hospital. Everything was canned in heavy syrup. You'd think hospitals could provide fruit juice, but when my mom was in the hospital, she was supposed to have a liquid with her pills before bedtime and all they could come up with was some icky synthetic sugar-bomb stuff. And she was diabetic! (And when you sign in, be sure to mention that you'll expect a discount on your hospital bill because you will not be using their foodservice. ) Best wishes for a successful surgery and good recovery. Guest guest
thought of a couple more in the form of malt loaf (fruit loaf) that can be sliced with spread on and to hand when needed, and also breakfast bars..(oats, seeds, nuts etc in different flavours). Guest guest
Hi Cyn Good luck for Friday. I hope it all goes well, and that you feel as well as possible afterwards. Hospitals do seem to be pretty useless about food! I would take several cartons of soya milk (for protein) and nuts and raisins (also for protein and minerals), and fruit to help fill you up - maybe bananas for the instant energy you will need for recovery. If you can take Vitamin C tablets with you (1 gram each) and take five a day to help things heal and ward off infections. Once again - good luck. We'll be thinking of you. Guest guest
Cyn, I think you might be talking to the wrong person. You might want to call the hospital cafeteria and ask for the manager or nutritionist. I spent some days in the hospital and had to educate them all. They kept coming into my room for instruction. They did have a vegan menu that was sort of pieced together. I begged for raw food as much as possible and that was difficult, as they wanted to give me canned fruit constantly. But the vegan menu did have beans at lunch and dinner, vegetables, and fruit. The biggest issue was whole grains. Apparently they didn't know what that means. I believe any hospital has some sort of vegan/vegetarian menu. I suggest you call and ask. And have spare fruit, nuts, and whole grain crackers/bread hidden at your bed side. Oh, and yes, they had soy milk for me. On my last day I wrote up my questionaire sheet for them. They TRACKED me down, the nutritionist came into my room, and I had NOT put my name on it. I was annoyed but realized all future vegans depended on this "teaching moment" so I educated them on whole grains, fresh, raw fruits and veggies, and a bit more. They seemed thankful! I still do feel like I was looked at like a freak but they WERE very interested. Shelley H
Guest guest
For two days I would take fresh fruit, fresh veggies pre-washed and ready to eat, nuts, bread, peanut butter, crackers. However, they will probably bring you jello and broth and canned fruit. You might not be able to eat normal food. Call in advance! Guest guest
Cyn, I will be thinking of you this Friday as you have your surgery. I have just finished most of my treatment for breast cancer, 4 surgeries, chemo, radiation, and am now on hormone therapy. My hair has grown back to about 4-5 inches long and I have chemo curls. When I read about someone with breast cancer my entire soul feels for them, and for you. Are you a member of breastcancer2 ? If so, we may have talked. If not, it is the most emotionally supportive group of people I have ever known, and you might like to check it out. I went vegan cold turkey on March 19 and have lost 46 pounds. The intent was/is to get healthy and keep the cancer from returning. So far, so good! I went strict vegan and focusing on raw foods as much as possible. No sugar, limit of oils, no processed food, no empty calories at all, nutrient dense raw foods. I am having a blast and the pounds keep coming off. I can't imagine ever eating a western diet again when my food is so much better! Good luck Friday. Most of the ladies on my breast cancer web site find the masectomy is not nearly as painful as they expected. Take good care of yourself. Guest guest
back in '91 when i was flitting between vegeatarianism and veganism, i had to spend over a week in the hospital, shattered pelvis. and the food service made it a bigger disaster. the first meal they sent me we chicken broth, the evening after i had been brought in. i hadn't eaten in 24 hrs more er less then. i sent it back, and said i needed a vegetarian meal. they came back with...another bowl of chicken broth. i ended up not eating until the enxt day when my then partner had to go down to the cafeteria and find me something. never did get a meal from the hospital service. (actually the food turned out to be the least of my worries at that place) nowadays, a different ex had gall stones, and had to go into the hospital. alta bates. this was about 5 yrs ago. totally different. she had vegan meals, they understood and everything the local kaiser permanente has a farmers market on fridays, and there's a natural foods market on the premises. too bad i don't have insurance anymore fraggle you're bored in retirement cuz your energies drained away, your money had no answer, you just still want more! your life was never different then the guy next door! all your neighbors are competitors, where'd you all go wrong? there never was a mountain to climb. potential friends are now your enemies, where'd you all go wrong? there never was a mountain to climb. BBJo - CKG @gro ups.com Wednesday, September 10, 2008 8:33 PM Need some suggestions. .. Well, folks. I got a double mastectomy scheduled for this Friday, Sept. 12. Most of you know I have had a lot of experience with cancer. I was talking with the intake nurse last night who goes over things with you before you go to the hospital. WHAT A HARD TIME SHE HAD WITH THE CONCEPT OF “VEGANâ€. I explained, slowly, patiently, about no animal products in diet or daily use. “Well, is that a religious choice?†she asked. WHAT THE CRAP DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING? No, I said, it is a philosophical choice. “Oh, then, it’s personal,†she replied. HUH? Anyway, she said that they would probably just give me “broth†at first. I explained that broth was in fact an animal product. “Jello’s fine, right?†she asked. Crap. Now I had to enlighten this person about fish bladder or isinglass or something. By now, she was convinced I’m crazy. “Eggs? Chicken?†she asked. Um, no. She told me that I would PROBABLY BE BETTER OFF IF I BROUGHT MY OWN FOOD TO THE HOSPITAL. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHsn ortsnortsnortdro olcoughcoughchok echokegaspgaspdr ool… So, gang, what do I pack for my 2 day camping trip to the hospital? I cannot take anything that needs refrigeration. They’ve got to have fruit there, right? I finally told her to just send up a banana or something and I would be fine. She WANTS ME TO BRING MY OWN FOOD. <snort> So, folks, help me out here. What would you take on a 2 day hospital picnic where you can neither keep something cool nor heat something up? Guest guest
Second reply to this one as I hadn't read it properly. Nobody gets enough vitamin C in their diet. Read the research and theories of Dr Linus Pauling. They make sense. From my own personal experience - since taking larger amounts of vitamin C I don't get the bad colds I used to, or any other sort of infection. The same is said of anyone else who takes at least 1 gram of vitamin C per day, or more. An orange, if fresh, will give you 30 mg - so I'll leave you to work out how much (fresh) food you would need to consume to obtain this level. Guest guest
1 gram? isnt that way over the recommended daily intake? seems kinda high? I thought 40mg standard? ( 3/4 way there with just that one orange) most vegies and vegans get more vitamin C that carnies, as they invarioubly eat more fruit & veg, and probably have no problems getting enough Too much will give you stomach pain & the runs.... Guest guest
The rdas are to stop you getting definite illness - i.e. scurvy with a lack of vitamin C. Too much ~might~ give you the runs but do you know how much too much is??? You certainly won't get the runs with 5 grams a day - you may get it if you take 20 grams - or you might not. You don't often need 20 grams in one day - maybe for measles or meningitis or cancer. For a cold it would be a good idea to take 5 grams per day. I don't think vegans eat more fruit and veg than the meat-eaters I know. There is stacks and stacks of research done on what vitamin C is good for, but obviously you can ignore it all if you wish. Incidentally, it is not uncommon that exhinacea can cause allergic reactions, so it is not always good for everyone.
