HI everyone. I am new to the whole vegetarian thing. I have not eaten

meat in almost a month and am working on cutting out cheese and dairy

as well. I do have a quick question about vitamins...Should I be using

them and what are good brands. I ask this because I am loosing a lot

of hair now and wonder if it is because I am not eating some of the

vitamins and stuff that I was consuming before. Any suggestions would

be great! Thanks so much!

Sounds like something else is going on. You don't need any vitamins

if you're eating a variety of whole foods (except vit. b12, which

people generally don't *need* to supplement right away because the

body stores a few years' worth). Vegan food has more vitamins and

minerals than meat, cheese, and dairy! What are you eating?

Hi and Welcome.

The important thing is to eat a good varied diet. If you do that you should have covered most bases. So make sure you eat lots of varied veg from red peppers/ brocoli/carrots etc, and plenty of fruit, apples/oranges/grapes, almonds and brazil nuts, plenty of beans/lentils & salads, and fortified soya milk if you can get it, and you shouldnt be too worried. If you are still worried, and you are in the UK, then The Vegan society have a specially devised vitamin see here :

Wow, not sure why your hair is falling out? I totally believe in vitamin! I

take a multi B with

alot of B12, Flaxseed, and I take an algae for the Omegas, and a Calcium. A lot

of people

overdue vitamin because of the advertising industry! I would go to the doctor

and research

the hair loss problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Jammypie,

I believe that a good multivitamin supplement is always a good idea

whether we eat animals or not because with our busy lives there might

always be something that we are forgetting to eat or that our body

needs and we might be missing and we don't know it.

As for loosing hair, I'm not sure why that happens. Although, that

never happened to me, I have heard of other vegans or vegetarians

noticing some different body changes after they cut out meat.

It could be their body adjusting.

i'd see a doctor or a nutritionist.

as for vitamins..i'm in the minority...don't take em..never have.,..

for me, as long as you get a nice balanced vegan diet, you should be fine. but again i'm in the minority...

cheers

Also, Jammypie,

As the Queen of Stress, I wanted to also comment that often

major life changes cause temporary stress that affect hair issues.  At least

they have with me.  Probably not what it is with you, but thought I would give

it a shot.  Cyn

Make sur eyou get plenty of b vitamins from lentils, beans and nuts etc. and you can take a supplement of brewers yeast. I personally take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, plus a few others - have done so for a few decades.

Although vitamin B12 maybe stored for a few years, it is not stored by everyone for that time. Also the recommended daily allowances are just sufficient to stop you getting pernicious anaemia - they are not enough to keep your heart healthy. I, after reading expert research from several sources, including a vegan, recommend having daily supplements or fortified foods.

Hair loss can be caused by many reasons. I myself experienced hair

loss when I dropped a lot of weight and was not eating enough. The

other time was due to a hormone shift. If the hair loss continues

consult a physician.

Eat well and from a variety of different foods.
