When meeting Sarah Kramer, the first thing you might notice is her vintage 1950s style clothing and her many tattoos. After a few moments of seeing her animated eyes dance as she tells you funny and unique stories, you can't help but think, "This gal's got sass!" In recognition of Kramer's distinct style and the upcoming release of her fourth cookbook, VegNews magazine decided to throw her a book release party and the Vegan Go-Go Book Bash ensued. "Sarah is extremely popular," said Colleen Holland, associate publisher at VegNews. "We wanted to recognize the accomplishment of her fourth book, and, well ... we're always looking for an excuse for a great veg party!" Held at the GingerRubio salon in San Francisco's Mission District, the dŽcor was chic, the vegan food fun while gourmet, and the guests were exceptional in varied ways. "Vegan Go-Go!: A Cookbook and Survival Manual for Vegans on the Road" (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2008, 256 pages) is a compact combination of cookbook, travel tips, and life lessons. With wit and candor, Canadian Kramer shares stories from her unusual childhood. "It wasn't until I got a little older that I realized not everyone's mother wore a cat costume on stage. I thought everyone's father could sword fight and recite ÔHamlet.'" Kramer impressed the crowd with her accessibility and warm personality. Raised in Canada in a vegetarian household Kramer explains that she was originally a vegetarian for her mom's reasons, but continued with the lifestyle and became vegan for her own. More than 10 years ago, she and a friend made cookbooks as Christmas gifts. The response from friends and family was so great that they began selling them online. After selling more than 900 copies in a short period of time, they knew they were on to something. With clever titles such as "How It All Vegan,La Dolce Vegan," and "Garden of Vegan," Kramer combines fun photos with enticing recipes. In "Vegan Go-Go" the recipes themselves are coded with "Quick and Easy,Travels Well,Will Impress Your Friends," and "Needs Special Ingredients" stamps. From breakfast to toothpaste, Kramer covers all bases. Her tofu loaf is simple and delicious and the Savory Sheppard's Pie is practically guaranteed to please any carnivore at the table. Recommendation: A quirky little book, this labor of love is a fun and helpful addition to any cookbook collection. * * * Contact Kel Kanady at books_at_bulletin
