Community Thanksgiving Events

It has been a tradition with Bay Area Vegetarians to ask for volunteers to organize a community Thanksgiving get-together in their local area. This provides an opportunity to celebrating Thanksgiving vegan style across the Bay Area.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteer hosts; Collin and Sharon are teaming up to host in Mountain View on the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, while Ann & Reeba in Pacifica and Kim & Jamie in San Francisco are hosting on Thanksgiving.

You can also celebrate Thanksgiving WITH the animals on Sat 11/22 -

Carol and The Chicken Man Protest KFC

"After receiving disturbing information from PETA, during March 2003, about how cruelly KFC treated the chickens they serve, I decided to arrange a protest–my first! Only one person showed up! It was Mike Borg."

Read the rest of Carol's story here.

And mark your calendars for the next KFC cruelty protest in San Jose on November 29th, and San Francisco on Sunday, Dec 14th.

Hurray for Prop 2! Thank you to everyone who voted for this, gathered signatures to qualify it for the ballot, and worked to make this a success.

The BAVeg Have a Heart, Go Veg leafleting events have been wonderful opportunities to distribute information for change. To date, 24,248 booklets have been distributed. The next leafleting is Wednesday 11/19 at 4:30 pm to SF commuters.

Elizabeth is starting a new leafleting opportunity at the Farmer's Markets in Menlo Park and Palo Alto. Dates and times vary, if you are interested, please contact her.

Book Club updates

Note we have two separate book clubs:

The Food for Thought book club, reading nonfiction veg*n and animal rights books, met to discuss The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol Adams, and picked Appetite for Profit by Michele Simon as our next book. The next meeting is Jan 11th in SF. New members are welcome. The Vegan Book club, which reads fiction, is full and has a waiting list. Is anyone interested in starting a new chapter?

In the South Bay, Vegi Garden, a Chinese vegetarian restaurant in Sunnyvale which offered dim sum, closed and Loving Hut opened in Palo Alto. The Palo Alto location is a cafe offering soups, sandwiches, salads, unlike the more traditional Vietnamese fare offered at its new San Francisco location and other Supreme Master Ching Hai restaurants.

In San Francisco, vegetarian Himalayan fusion foods are now available at Karma in SF's Richmond district. This is mostly a takeout place, so check it out. We've heard that Cafe Gratitude, which has 4 raw restaurants in SF, Berkeley, and San Rafael, has unadvertised specials at its San Rafael location -- cooked vegan tacos and burritos, test items for its new location in SF's Mission district.

Seed of Life is a new vegan restaurant in Berkeley, sharing space and opening up after Vital Ital Calabash closes.

For more details on the above, and regular updates, check out our Guide News blog

Have Your Say -- voice your opinion with an Ultimate Guide review. With 1,579 reviews in the Ultimate Guide, these vegetarian restaurants are ranked the best.

Cooking with Compassion and Good Healthby Chef Alex Bury

Vegan holiday food is actually some of the easiest and tastiest food you can make (or buy). Below are recipes for holiday winter squash, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. Cranberry sauce, green beans, salads, sweet potatoes…all the other favorites are already vegan, or so close you won’t need a recipe (Annie’s Goddess dressing instead of the tired old ranch dressing, green beans cooked in veg stock instead of chicken stock, etc).

For in a Republic, who is “the country Is it the Government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the Government is merely a servant—merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.

Mark Twain
