Guest guest
For decades the farmers lobby has convieniently and simplistically blamed the badger as the most important vector in the spread of bovine tuberculosis in cattle. This is despite the findings of yet another study costing 34 million pounds, taking the lives of 12,000 badgers, which stated badger culling cannot meaningfully contribute to the control of BTB in britain.Even though there has been intensive culling of badgers in the republic of ireland the infection level in herds remains largely constant ,whereas in northern ireland the infection level has virtually halved due to cattle movement control . Now called biosecurity a rather pompous title for the idea that moving cattle from area to area is likely to increase the risk of exposure and spread of BTB .The rush to slaughter ignores non lethal solutions. An injectable badger vaccine is expected in 2010 and an oral version by 2014 and a cattle vaccine by 2015.The welsh assembly was supposedly created to reflect more democracy for the people of wales but seems to be more of the same powerful lobby groups affecting policy .what are peoples views on this? If you feel strongly you could write polite letters to Elin JonesAM,national assembly for wales, cardiff bay,cf991na or email elin.jones .as vegans what else should we be doing.
