Record highs for date fall by mid-morning in January heat wave

(01-12) 11:24 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Shirtsleeves in January?

It's shaping up to be one of the warmest mid-January days on record in the Bay

Area. In two cities, record highs for the date were obliterated before noon, and

temperature marks elsewhere are likely to fall as well.

In Santa Rosa, the old record of 66 degrees, set in 1967, was eclipsed by 9 a.m.

Two hours later, the mercury was at 76 degrees and rising.

In Oakland, the record of 65, set in 1970, was a distant memory when the

downtown temperature hit 72 before noon.

It was 66 degrees in San Francisco, just shy of the Jan. 12 mark of 67 set in

1948. A record for the date looks like a sure thing in the city and around the

Bay Area, the National Weather Service said.

" I'd say there is that possibility, " agency forecaster Bob Benjamin said.

" Temperatures are warming up, and some of the records are not that formidable. "

The highest January temperature ever in San Francisco was 79 degrees, recorded

Jan. 8, 1962. In Oakland it reached 74 degrees on Jan. 29, 1974, although

records for the city on file at the National Weather Service go back only to

1970.

The warm weather is the result of a " fairly strong " high-pressure system that's

bringing warm air off the land, the reverse of the Bay Area's normal onshore

flow, Benjamin said.

Today is expected to be the warmest day of the week, but above-normal

temperatures are likely for the next few days, the weather service said.

Rain? Not a drop in sight.

No record highs here in Wisconsin (north central USA, by the Great Lakes). Wind chills the next couple days will be in the -30* to -40* (F) range. Brrrrrrr. You can get frostbite just by having skin exposed to the wind for a few minutes.Sue--- On Mon, 1/12/09, fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote:fraggle <EBbrewpunx Record highs for date fall by mid-morning in January heat wave"doomerism (AT) googl (DOT) com" <doomerism (AT) googl (DOT) com>, "vegan chat" Monday, January 12, 2009, 2:46 PM
