Guest guest
Hello everyone. First of all, I want to wish fraggle well. I hope you're feeling better. I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me out or suggest any remedies/tips for my seborrheic dermatitis. It's a chronic skin condition I've had since at least high school (over 15 yrs) and it has recently flared up again due to stress and cold weather. I can usually keep it under control, but this current bout I'm having is very taxing on me. I've tried everything from natural creams for eczema to thick body creams by Alba. While it has gotten a touch better, nothing seems to be working very well. Has anyone had any experience with this or have any idea what might help? I will not use anything on the common market such as cortisone creams or those that are not vegan. Which, unfortunately, can make the options very limited. I've done lots of research and without going broke on trying new and expensive products, I thought I would see if anyone might be able to help at all. Thanks in advance! Guest guest
I don't have any experience with this condition,* but here are some random suggestions. Have you tried consulting an herbalist? For skin conditions, the first thing I think of is liver herbs (usually bitter tasting). You can try eating bitter foods every day such as dandelion greens or artichoke or burdock root (more earthy than bitter), or maybe try taking herbal bitters that you can find in a natural-foods store. Or maybe you can find (or grow) a mix of bitter baby greens that you can eat every day? Nettle tea, if you have a source of fresh nettles, is great for everything. My herb teacher recommended burdock oil externally for seborrhea. You can also make a strong rosemary tea (for skin) or a strong rosemary vinegar (for hair) to try externally. My other suggestion is to go to a bookstore or library (or google) and familiarize yourself with liver herbs and adaptogens. Look for those herbs in the ingredients of prepared ointments. Or -- it's not that hard -- make your own potions and lotions. Lots of tinctures are available, but aside from a general " herbal bitters " formula, I wouldn't go taking a bunch of tinctures without the guidance of an herbalist. I'd concentrate on foods and external stuff. *I did make a general herbal salve a few years ago that my aunt used to clear a heat rash. She'd used a prescription cream to no avail for months; my salve cleared it up within days. It's always amazing when herbs work. I had the same salve on hand one day when I was bitten by a mosquito. I watched a large red welt form instantly, applied the salve, and watched it go away. I also used the salve when I smashed my thumb in my folding bicycle. It hurt for 10-20 minutes, then immediately got better. At 4:38 AM +0000 2/15/09, dadiemert wrote: >Hello everyone. First of all, I want to wish fraggle well. Guest guest
My son used to have eczema when he was little, and I eventually found that getting enough essential fatty acids helped. I also used to use glycerin topically, when his skin was sore and cracked. I used to use bicarbonate of soda, or salt sometimes, in his baths. I don't know if this would work for you, but it might be worth considering. I hope you find something that works. Guest guest
Thank you yarrow for all of the great suggestions. I'm not too familiar with herbs, but it's something I've been thinking about more and more. I will definitely be looking into it all. I appreciate your response!
