Guest guest
Remember the Victory Garden from WWII? I don't. I'm not that old. But, I've read about them! I and my fiancee and a bunch of friends on facebook and around the neighborhood are into it! My fiancee is looking for a way to get the local Gov, newspapers and churches to do a big one down town to support food banks and maybe generate a little ecopatriotism. is there anything like this where any of you live? if so, how did it kick off? It seems like such a good idea.I'm very excited about this! But, I just like growing stuff, anyway,so... Bill-in Utah
Guest guest
Not exactly a victory garden -- I belong to a community garden, where each person (about 150 of us) pays an annual fee to the city. It's been around for 3 decades and has fought off plans to make its site into a parking lot, and since land is so expensive around here, the garden is a " temporary " use subject to the city's whims. There's also something called spin gardening , where people get permission to use other people's yards to grow food. WWI also had victory gardens! They produced over $500 million dollars worth of food; the victory gardens of WWII produced $1 billion. Slogans from the National War Garden Commission (WWI) Will you have a part of Victory? Every Garden a Munition Plant War Gardens Over the Top: The Seeds of Victory Insure the Fruits of Peace War Gardens Victorious Every War Garden a Peace Plant Can Vegetables, Fruit, and the Kaiser too later amended to: The Kaiser Is Canned -- Can Food At 3:28 AM +0000 3/17/09, shinobibombay wrote: >Remember the Victory Garden from WWII? Guest guest
I haven't heard of anything like this in the UK recently - but with the recession, you never know what will happen. Guest guest
Hi Bill, Check out http://www.eattheview.org/ for a site pushing for the Obamas to plant a Victory Garden on the First Lawn. They are hoping that planting a VG in such a high-profile location with inspire others to do the same. I think the idea of Victory Gardens (to either weather the economic or military wars we're waging) is a great idea! My husband and I are new to gardening, but we've got an acre of land and some high hopes. If we don't get around to doing it this year, it's definitely on the agenda for next planting season! We have a lot of deer here, so it involves some deer netting and more expensive planning to save any veggies from becoming lunch for the many critters here. Let me know how others receive the idea in your area or if you have any advice for novice gardeners! Whitty , " shinobibombay " <shinobibombay wrote: > > Remember the Victory Garden from WWII?
