I used to hear " you can't live without meat " all the time when I was

growing up from an aunt who had meat at every single meal! This was

long before I knew it was possible to be a vegetarian, so I think it

was at least partly to persuade herself. Just think of it as

rationalizations so that they don't have to think about the dead

bodies they're eating.

I like the book by Carol Adams called " Living Among Meat-Eaters. " She

talks about how to deal with this kind of atmosphere.

at my last job, one of my friends organized a going away party for me- and he made it a rule that nothing could come into my party that wasn't vegan (except for non-vegan people- all the food, however, was vegan).  The NUTRITIONIST refused to attend my party because she " only eats meat. "   That's exactly what she said.

And get this, when she finally did come to the party, she ate a piece of this fabulous cake that my friend had made (one of those vegan-by-accident recipes that was in his family) and said that it " didn't have as much flavor " because there weren't eggs in it.   I kindly pointed out to her that eggs are a BINDING AGENT, not a flavoring agent in cakes.

My point is that some people are ridiculous.   And you will encounter them frequently.  It's hard at first, because you aren't used to it, but eventually you hardly notice. :)  Hang in there!

We had a friend who wouldn't eat a piece of birthday cake because it was

vegan!!! Everyone else had some and thought it delicious.

My fiancee's daughter is the same way. Even though she was raised vegetarian! Of

course, she is really big, now. Which is a shame. Because she was a very

attractive gal in high school. But, I think it is more than just the food issue.

I never like to criticize my fiancee, but she likes to say Vegan a lot. Like

some sort of catch phrase or something. I try to tell her to not say anything.

My logic is that if they don't know and then they like the food, then find out

it is a better strategy, and exposes their hypocrisy. I figure, we're not

religious zealots out to convert the world. That only turns people off.

There is a stigma attached to the word " vegan " here in Utah. It seems the the

Mormon youth have taken it to the extreme; calling themselves 'straightedgers'

and acting more like skinhead punks. Beating people up for eating meat and

damaging peoples property and setting the minks free and stuff. Don't get me

wrong, I love the sex pistols and the ramones,et al..., and I am very much an

animal welfare advocate. But, the wannabe gangsta/Peta/Greenpeace people have

made us appear like anarchists and terrorists in the local governments eyes.

Hi i am new to the group. have been veggie for 23 years and vegan for the last 10 and i am proud to be so. i am vegan only because i don't wish to contribute to animal suffering. i consider myself an animal rights campaginer and i support peta as well as many other organisations. i am also pagan. great to see so many other people care.don't worry about what other people say. you must do what you know is right and be true to yourself no matter what others think.

I agree with your philosophy Bill as far as not really " advertising " that

everything is vegan. Some people are just turned off by the simple word

" vegan " . They associate it with unflavorful food even if they've never really

had vegan food purposefully.

I am lucky to work in such an open-minded workplace where there are 2 of us who

are vegan, yet many staff are thoughtful enough to make vegan dishes during

potlucks. If people begin to tamper with your food and harass you in your

workplace, then there is a serious issue going on that maybe should be brought

up with HR. If this isn't a viable option, then look to see if your

organization has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). These are confidential

and great for talking to someone about what options you can pursue. Afterall,

you need to feel safe and comfortable in your own work environment.

I hope all works out for you!

Are you sure that PETA is the right charity to support? After all they are

'welfarists' and not exactly pro towards Animal Rights, and I've known them to

be sexist too! I'd much prefer to support real AR charities. It's worth

finding out more about them and their work imho.

Hi i think Peta are an AR group as they support the ALF and anyone who does that

is o.k by me. i am a supporter of many different groups such as Shac and Speak.

and others who are considered militant or extreme by some. it seems wanting an

end to all the abuse of non-human animals is thought to be extreme nowadays.

Groups like ALF are giving vegans a bad name. Especially in the community where

I live. I appreciate their fervor and the cause. But, I do not support their

actions. Their energy could be spent in more productive and effective means in

bringing the issues to light. Terrorist tactics and midnight vandalism are the

stuff of juvenile delinquents and do nothing to advance the movement other than

to generate animosity and disdain. PETA is sexist and does not offer a healthy

promotion of the movement.

Bill, I completely agree. Just mentioning I'm vegan to someone will often be met with "oh like one of those PETA crazies!" or something similar. I don't like the image they portray. Although they do have some great info resources and recipes. I also don't believe that the destruction of property helps the movement. Remember that animal rights advocates have been labeled eco-terrorists by the gov't already. Also, I don't think it's necessary to say things, like "they are welfarists." (as was said in an earlier response). The whole "anti-welfarists" argument just divides the animal rights community unnecessarily when we are all fighting for the greater good. Taking different approaches, small steps vs. huge actions, should not be construed as not having animal rights and liberation as the ultimate goal. Animal advocates and activists should not be

turning against one another over this sort of labeling. We have enough forces against us already. We should be cooperating and working for the larger cause.JenniferNYC--- On Fri, 3/27/09, shinobibombay <shinobibombay wrote:shinobibombay <shinobibombay Re: resistance and mocking Date: Friday, March 27, 2009, 4:45 PM

Well, my fiancee and I decided to tyr a new approach. We don't know very many

Vegans ourselves, but we know there are quite a few around us. So, we decided to

do community service. What we decided upon was timely in that Michelle Obama

decided to plant a garden at the White House. We started organizing " VICTORY

GARDENS FOR OGDEN " . Then found a bunch of folks real quick when the word got

out. (Only a vegan would look at an undeveloped lot and think of all the food

that could be grown there) Come to find out we have a lot of support. And it

actually looks like it's gonna work! Which is a miracle when you consider that

the Oligarchy which runs Utah thinks God wants us to eat animals.!We found lots

of support on facebook, which if you want to know about those I will post the

link only if someone asks for it. In case you are interested here is a link to

her blog in the local paper about it...

Bill,

> I completely agree. Just mentioning I'm vegan to someone will often be met

with " oh like one of those PETA crazies! " or something similar. I don't like the

image they portray. Although they do have some great info resources and recipes.

I also don't believe that the destruction of property helps the movement.

Remember that animal rights advocates have been labeled eco-terrorists by the

gov't already.

>

> Also, I don't think it's necessary to say things, like " they are welfarists. "

(as was said in an earlier response). The whole " anti-welfarists " argument just

divides the animal rights community unnecessarily when we are all fighting for

the greater good. Taking different approaches, small steps vs. huge actions,

should not be construed as not having animal rights and liberation as the

ultimate goal. Animal advocates and activists should not be turning against one

another over this sort of labeling.  We have enough forces against us already.

We should be cooperating and working for the larger cause.

JerroldI have been vegetarian for almost 4 yrs & vegan for 9 months. I live in NYC, so you think people would be used to vegans by now, but I still get some pretty biased and uninformed comments--Jennifer--- On Sat, 3/28/09, Jerrrold Fuller <cocopuffs771 wrote:Jerrrold Fuller <cocopuffs771Re: Re: resistance and mocking Date: Saturday, March 28, 2009, 6:40 AM

I did that at work.

It was an experiment me and my vegetarian co-worker did.

People are always bringing bake goods for everyone. i.e. donuts, etc. So,

We went to our local whole foods and bought vegan cupcakes for everyone at my

job. We left them in the kitchen with a sign that said

" Free VEGAN cupcakes "

nobody ate them.

Then, a few weeks later we bought the same vegan cupcakes but this time our sign

said just said " Free Cupcakes "

everyone ate them.

I hope they weren't really the same cupcakes. They would be stale, no? (LOL!)

Yup. People don't get it.
