Researchers had to go all the way to northern Iran to find tea drinkers that drank tea almost straight out of the kettle. We asked Yvonne Bishop-Weston a nutritionist in London. " No tea doesn't give you cancer in fact many teas are so full of antioxidents it can help prevent disease. The cause of increased risk of cancer in this study was really hot liquid. The solution is simple – wait about 5 minutes for the tea to cool slightly. " " Waiting 5 minutes for the tea to brew has an added advantage of allowing antioxidents to infuse more thoroughly too. My advice is to avoid teas with lots of caffiene in too, such as black tea, which may have a detrimental effect on some people's immune systems. My favourite is Rooibos , Rooibosch or Red Bush Tea which is naturally very low in caffeine " Oily Fish Prevents Prostate Cancer Another red herring? NHS choices confirm " The study looked at fish and fatty acids in the diets of men with and without aggressive prostate cancer. It found that healthy men had a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids, and interpreted this to mean that omega-3 has a protective effect against cancer. It also found that men with a particular gene variation that codes for the COX-2 enzyme had increased risk of prostate cancer, and this risk fell with higher omega-3 consumption. " Our London Nutritionist Yvonne says " Fish is not the only source of omega 3 and not even the only source of long chain omega 3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA which many people have been shown to be short of in tests we run in our Harley Street clinic. The long chain omega 3 fats EPA and DHA can be found in algae and Echium Oil has been shown to be very effective in increasing EPA levels. 1 gram of Echium oil has been shown to potentially convert to 300mg of EPA. Obviously these oils, being sourced from plants are far more sustainable than extracting oil from fish which is extremely wasteful and damaging to fragile marine ecosystems. " Vegetarian Diets Cause Cancer Actually the research from Oxford university shows that vegetarians have lower incidence of all cancers. In the trial made up of healthy omnivores, vegetarians and vegans all participants had lower than average incidence of cancer than the national average. Within the study, the incidence of all cancers combined was lower among vegetarians than among meat eaters, but the incidence of colorectal cancer was slightly higher in vegetarians than in meat eaters. " This blip in the usual statistics that support the hypothesis of vegetarian diets as being healthier could be due to a greater reliance on dairy foods which can be just as high in saturated animal fat and low in fibre as meat. It has to be pointed out that the variation between the two groups of healthier eaters in this trial is very small and just one or two consumers of hydrogenated fat rich vegetarian foods could have skewed this unusual result. " says Yvonne, Nutritionist, London
