Monsanto, Dole in vegetable collaboration

Tue Jun 23, 2009 8:27am EDT

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Monsanto Co and Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc said on

Tuesday that they would collaborate to develop vegetables that could

be more attractive to consumers.

Monsanto and Dole said they would use plant breeding to improve the

nutrition, flavor, color, texture, taste and aroma of the vegetables.

The five-year collaboration will focus on broccoli, cauliflower,

lettuce and spinach, the companies said.

If new products were created under the collaboration, they could be

commercialized by Dole in North America.

Finally! Square blue carrots that taste like pineapple.

Or bright red cauliflower that tastes like french fries.

Lettuce that tastes like bacon.

The mind reels.

Y'know, in my experience the best way to improve the nutrition, flavour,

colour, etc. of vegetables is to grow them in your own garden, and then pick

and eat them fresh...

Yes! Nothing I can buy, not even from the farmers' market, is as good

as what I can grow.

Also, I know my homegrown food doesn't have GMOs, pesticides, or even

manure residues, and wasn't grown with blood meal or bone meal or

fish fertilizer.
