Guest guest
Hi everyone, just been reading a few of your comments on dairy , so i thought i would share my veiw. The trouble with dairy is that cows milk isn't what it used to be . Someone talked about you gran living to a ripe old age on dairy and the likes but back then the cows were healthy and happy and fed on natural feeds and people never comsumed too much , like milk shakes, cream on ,and in everything and on and on.. but the cows these days are more or less designed to produce more and more milk the quality and the means of getting it is not an issue, the cow are given ani-biotics and fed un-natural diets to boost production, the feeds contain herbicides and pesticides and all sorts of harmful fretilizers, the dairy corp. is so big that their multi million dollar campaigns can over-ride just about anything. So they get away with what ever they want and feed the public all sorts of B.. S ... about calcium and how healthy milk is for you , we are too quick to forget that this is the life giving substance to these creatures babies and not ours to flavour chocolate or strawberry.. id better not get started on the inhumane treatment of these poor baby calvs!! any way i think that any one boycoting dairy are doing theirselvs a great benifit and also giving less to the millions of dairy farms who do our wourld harm. See Ya Christy >> Yes, thinking about how things are produced is a good way to make choices. A good resource for people who have people in their life who are not vegan is the http://www.drgreene.com website. He's not vegan, but he's a pediatrician who gives good reasons for buying organic, and at the top of his list of what to eat organic is dairy. I wouldn't recommend that *anyone* eat dairy, but I think reading his reasons may persuade people to think twice about consuming it. And once they're on that slippery slope... Anyway, here's his whole list. He makes a point of talking about how things are produced and what the effects on soil are. Again, I'm not advocating eating anything on his list, and I'm especially not recommending #1 and #8, just offering a resource for people around you whose minds may be opened a bit by reading this kind of thing. (And then you can give them Dr. Campbell's The China Study if they still cling to dairy, and then have them look up their health problems on Dr. McDougall's website.) http://www.drgreene.com/21_2155.html 1. organic milk 2. organic potatoes 3. organic peanut butter 4. organic baby foods 5. organic catsup (and marinara and pizza sauce) 6. organic cotton 7. organic apples 8. organic beef or replace with plant proteins 9. organic soy 10. organic corn 11. organic wine
Guest guest
Thanks. FYI. The New York Times ( http://bit.ly/w3Fx6 ) and LA TImes ( http://bit.ly/CoOIT ) Denver Post ( http://bit.ly/tuiqx )published a report a few weeks ago that over the last 8 months or so, dairies in California and other places have experienced a reduction in demand for cow milk by 30-50% or so. And cow milk price reduced by about 30% or so. Some dairy farmers have committed suicide and others have gone out of business. Some cow milk farmers are threatening a boycott by instead of selling cow milk, to dump it down the sewage drain. The last bit seemed a bit hilarious. There was another report of a dairy farmer committing a double homicide and murder ( http://bit.ly/19LJgw )
Guest guest
I totally agree with you Christy! Not to mention drinking dairy in general is kind of sick when you think about it. Dairy is meant to be drunk by the babies of the animal that it was produced by. It is high in fat to help the babies gain weight in a very very short amount of time. It is healthy for the very young, but given that most of us adults have stopped growing we probably don't need something that in nature was meant for this function. At the point that we stop suckling our mothers breast is it sanitary or appetizing to in a sense be sucking on another female's breast? I can't stomach it. ick!Christy Hudson <christyhudson Sent: Sunday, June 28, 2009 8:59:09 PM My gripes with dairy! Guest guest
These are such good points. I was the one who talked about not worry so much about health in my vegan diet because my forebears ate really fatty and salty foods but lived a long time anyway. I don't do McDougall because of this. A regular old vegan diet, including meat analogs, is healthy enough for me. But I didn't mean at all to advocate eating meat or dairy. My main motivation for that is environmental, but you make a good case for the health risks and the terrible treatment of animals. Guest guest
a lot of the demand for milk has come from overseas markets, as globalization spread, and new markets were found. don't think of "milk", think of milk products. dried powdered milk, whey, milk soilds, etc. in recent years the american market has pushed dairy products into regions where there has been little demand (such as china). this fueled the growth of dairy farmeing, and encouraged dairy farmers t o produce more and more. now with the global recession and economic downturn many markets have pulled way back and people are going back to more of their traditional diets. bad for pizza hut and mcdonalds, good for the world and the environment.
