Hi,

I am new to this board and looked in the archives on butter substitute. I am

also a new vegan. Any suggestions on a good butter substitute? I would prefer

to be able to buy at local grocer but also have a Wild Oats and Trader Joes. I

am in the US if that is helpful. Thanks CeAnne in NM

Yes, toast and recipes and I like other things too but sometimes just good ol butter is what hits the spot. Thanks I will check into those. --- On Wed, 7/15/09, yarrow <yarrow wrote:yarrow <yarrowRe: Information on vegan butter Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 4:44 PM

How do you want to use it? On toast? In recipes? You can find all

kinds of nonhydrogenated vegetable-oil spreads, such as Smart

Balance. If you want an added fat for recipes, you can use any

vegetable oil you like.

I tend to prefer other things on toast, such as nut butters or apple

butter. Years ago, I used a vegan cream cheese a few times, but I

haven't tried any of those products for at least 10 years.

My favorite one is Earth Balance. NOT to be confused with Smart Balance. To me it tastes the most real and I use it for everything from toast to cooking! I make some wonderful vegan cookies using it! We like their Original Natural Buttery Spread in the tub, haven't tried their other varieties.

I thought that all the nonhydrogenated vegetable-oil spreads except Earth

Balance had one or more " hidden " animal products?

Yeah, probably Earth Balance is what I had in mind, I haven't used

any butter substitutes much but remembered " something balance. "

Though I thought there was more than one choice!

In the UK we have several that are vegan non-hydrogenated. We use Pure but

there are others by Granose etc. that have been around for many years. I would

imagine there must be some where you are.
