Guest guest
Hi, my name is Asia and Im in my early 20's and just began a vegan lifestyle two days ago. I am trying to lose 30lbs at the same time. Although I did not go vegan just to lose weight. I have lots of questions for vetren vegans. I am concerned about getting enough protien and calcium in my diet daily. I dont like tofu, so I will need help finding other sources of protien. so far Im aware of nuts and beans and lentils, but nuts have alot of calories and i am trying to lose wieght. I am worried about beans giving me too much gas, but I bought a bunch anyway. Does anyone have any weight loss success stories they would like to share with me? What foods worked best for you, meal ideas? Thank you-Asia
Guest guest
HI Asia You won't need to worry about protein or calcium - there is enough in vegetables and nuts. You will need to eat dark green leaf vegetables and broccoli, and any nuts. Nuts are good for protein and you don't need to eat too many to get enough. Steak is 122 calories per 100 grams - which is what the recommended weight of meat per person per meal was many years ago when I ate meat. Nuts average about 550 calories per 100 grams, but 100 grams of nuts is quite a lot to eat, and I would probably eat about 25 grams for the protein in any meal. If you do that then it shouldn't be a problem with your weight, plus you will be getting all the healthy nutrients from nuts. What foods worked best for you, meal ideas? <<<< Hi, Asia, and welcome! I'm losing weight as well, and I can share a few ideas. I'm doing Weight Watchers, which is vegan-friendly and easy to follow. You might want to check into that. Another option is simply to count calories. Get a reference for caloric content of foods, make sure you're eating a good balance of whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits, and set a calorie goal. Ask your doctor or nutritionist for a reasonable caloric goal, because it depends on your age. For me, at age 55, I'd be looking at something like 1500 calories a day to lose about a pound a week. Younger folks can eat more. A pound a week is a fine pace, though. All the advice I've ever heard suggests that you go slowly on weight loss for best long-term results. Soy is a good protein source, but you don't have to eat tofu. There's tempeh, for one. You can also use meat analogs, which are soy but not tofu. They're so weight loss friendly that they come up regularly at my Weight Watchers meetings from the non-vegetarians. You've only been at it a couple of days, so give yourself time to experiment and learn what works best for you. As for beans, the gas problem is a bit overblown. As your body gets used to them, for instance, gas issues diminish. Also, there are products, such as Beano, that can control it. Beans are great for you, so don't give up on them too soon! Guest guest
Hi Asia,I don't care for tofu either, but when it's disguised I can't detect it. I have tofu every morning in a smoothie and it's fine. My problem with it is the texture, so if it's blended with other things I don't even know it's there.Patricia--- On Sat, 8/1/09, bantrymoon <bantrymoon wrote:bantrymoon <bantrymoon Re:New Member-Asia Date: Saturday, August 1, 2009, 12:07 PM >>>> Hi, my name is Asia and Im in my early 20's and just began a vegan lifestyle two days ago. Guest guest
I have been counting calories on a non-vegan diet for over a year now. i have lost about 75lbs counting calories. I still want to lose another 30lbs, but I am plain tired of counting calories. I know fruits and veggies are so low in calories and so high in nutrients and fiber, that there really isnt any need to keep track of them. but since i have lost alot of weight, I DO have to keep track of protien and calcium. See, i know alot of people who lose weight, but also lose hair and their natural " glow " . So far that has not been me because i have been making sure i get enough nutrients, and i supplement what i dont get. But now on the vegan diet, its not enough to just say, " dont worry about protien and calcium, there is enough in the vegan foods " . I made a chart of all the fruits, veggies, and nuts i regularly eat, and it is clear that I will NOT be getting enough protien and calcium from my diet so far. According to my chart, the food with the most protein is beans, and i dont know how much of them i can eat. As for calcium, soy milk and almond milk have 20-30% of Daily Value. Ive been hearing alot of differing opionions on soy, so just to be safe i think i will stick to almond milk. the next best source of calcium would be an orange or broccoli, which only have 7% of the daily reccomended value. If not for the almond milk, I would need to eat more than 14 servings of oranges or broccoli to get enough calcium PER DAY! Thats not reasonable. So that is why i am worried. I guess I am just very health sensative. Right now I am looking for meal plans. i have been living off mostly fruit, corn chips, rice, and chocolate that last couple of days. I even made some vegan chocolate chip cookies which turned out great. , bantrymoon <bantrymoon wrote: > > >>>> Hi, my name is Asia and Im in my early 20's and just began a vegan > lifestyle two days ago. Guest guest
Most of the older advice on protein is for too much - we don't need as much as they used to recommend. I promise you, you can get enough protein from vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans. The founder of the Vegan Society lived to his 90s and was very active at that late stage of his life - living only on vegan foods. If you are worried about keeping your sparkle make sure you get enough Omegas - from nuts and seeds (linseed, hemp seed, pumpkin seed etc.) Jo - asianikuda Saturday, August 01, 2009 10:12 PM Re:New Member-Asia I have been counting calories on a non-vegan diet for over a year now. i have lost about 75lbs counting calories. Guest guest
Yes, you are right about omegas. i bought a package of flax seeds and I have been using them instead of eggs in my baking and in my french toast this morning. But aside from getting enough omega 3, i have been really light headed the last 2 days. i think i am still adjusting to this diet. I am looking for recipes to keep me fueled, because i cannot survive on fruit alone. Today i made some buckwheat, and also some vegetarian chili. but i wont be eating it till 2morrow, because now its late. , " jo.heartwork " <jo.heartwork wrote: > > Most of the older advice on protein is for too much - we don't need as much as they used to recommend. Guest guest
I ground up the flaxseeds in a blender with some water (as an egg replacer). Then I added vanilla, almond milk, and cinnamon to the mix. Then I dipped the bread in, and baked the soaked breads in the oven. It turned out pretty good. I nooked some frozen berries in the microwave with some sweetener for a nice syrup. , Patricia <moondreamer64_2000 wrote: > > How did you use the flaxseed meal to make French toast? > > Patricia > > --- On Sun, 8/2/09, asianikuda <asianikuda wrote: > > asianikuda <asianikuda > Re:New Member-Asia > > Sunday, August 2, 2009, 9:45 PM > > Yes, you are right about omegas. i bought a package of flax seeds and I have been using them instead of eggs in my baking and in my french toast this morning. > > But aside from getting enough omega 3, i have been really light headed the last 2 days. i think i am still adjusting to this diet. Guest guest
Thanks.Patricia--- On Mon, 8/3/09, asianikuda <asianikuda wrote:asianikuda <asianikuda Re:New Member-Asia Date: Monday, August 3, 2009, 12:21 PMI ground up the flaxseeds in a blender with some water (as an egg replacer). Then I added vanilla, almond milk, and cinnamon to the mix. Then I dipped the bread in, and baked the soaked breads in the oven. It turned out pretty good. I nooked some frozen berries in the microwave with some sweetener for a nice syrup. , Patricia <moondreamer64_2000 wrote:>> How did you use the flaxseed meal to make French toast?> > Patricia> > --- On Sun, 8/2/09, asianikuda <asianikuda wrote:> > asianikuda <asianikuda> Re:New Member-Asia> > Sunday, August 2, 2009, 9:45 PM> > Yes, you are right about omegas. i bought a package of flax seeds and I have been using them instead of eggs in my baking and in my french toast this morning.> > But aside from getting enough omega 3, i have been really light headed the last 2 days. i think i am still adjusting to this diet. I am looking for recipes to keep me fueled, because i cannot survive on fruit alone. Today i made some buckwheat, and also some vegetarian chili. but i wont be eating it till 2morrow, because now its late.> > > , "jo.heartwork" <jo.heartwork@> wrote:> >> > Most of the older advice on protein is for too much - we don't need as much as they used to recommend. I promise you, you can get enough protein from vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans. The founder of the Vegan Society lived to his 90s and was very active at that late stage of his life - living only on vegan foods. If you are worried about keeping your sparkle make sure you get enough Omegas - from nuts and seeds (linseed, hemp seed, pumpkin seed etc.)> > > > Jo> > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > asianikuda > > > > Saturday, August 01, 2009 10:12 PM> > Re:New Member-Asia> > > > > > I have been counting calories on a non-vegan diet for over a year now. i have lost about 75lbs counting calories. I still want to lose another 30lbs, but I am plain tired of counting calories. I know fruits and veggies are so low in calories and so high in nutrients and fiber, that there really isnt any need to keep track of them. but since i have lost alot of weight, I DO have to keep track of protien and calcium. See, i know alot of people who lose weight, but also lose hair and their natural "glow". So far that has not been me because i have been making sure i get enough nutrients, and i supplement what i dont get.> > > > But now on the vegan diet, its not enough to just say, "dont worry about protien and calcium, there is enough in the vegan foods". So that is why i am worried.> > > > I guess I am just very health sensative. Right now I am looking for meal plans. i have been living off mostly fruit, corn chips, rice, and chocolate that last couple of days. I even made some vegan chocolate chip cookies which turned out great.> > > > , bantrymoon <bantrymoon@> wrote:> > >> > > >>>> Hi, my name is Asia and Im in my early 20's and just began a vegan > > > lifestyle two days ago.
