Portland (Oregon, USA) has a reputation for being veg-friendly, but

recently I discovered just how well my home town treats its vegans.

I belong to an organization called NW Veg. It publishes a list of vegan,

vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurants. I'd gotten into a rut of going

to the same one or two places, so my partner and I started looking up

different ones on their list. We found 5 or so vegan restaurants we'd

never tried.

We decided to try a place called Papa G's Vegan Deli. It was wonderful!

Great hot dishes, great salad bar, great desserts, not too expensive.

Can't say enough about it.

It's close to just about everything we do in Portland -- films, theater,

yarn stores (okay, that's just me.) What a treat to find a place we both

love where we don't have to give the staff the third degree. " Is there

any chicken broth in that? Any dairy? " Everything was vegan. We could

eat it all. So then the choice was just which delicious entrees to

choose for the deli plate. That was hard enough!

Cheers,

Trish

That sounds wonderful. We don't have any vegan restaurants around here - I think the nearest is the one in Brighton which is a couple of hours away! We'd like to try that sometime soon - maybe when the family visit we could do the trip. We have one veggie co-op style cafe that is open at lunchtimes in the week - they usually have one vegan option. There is a veggie restaurant about half an hour away, and about 90% of their menu is vegan. Obviously we end up going to the same place most of the time we eat out - luckily the food is tasty.
