Guest guest
We just happened to be near the place Veg News calls Portland's " vegan mini-mall " today when the vegan bakery, SweetPea, was having Donut Day. I got a Boston Creme -- cream filled with chocolate icing. My husband got one, too, along with a chocolate with nuts donut. Then we swung by a new vegan place we'd heard about, the Bye and Bye tavern, just to check out the menu. Unfortunately for us, we were too full to have lunch, because the menu looked fabulous. Next weekend we are for sure going over there. It has lots of Southern specialties, such as barbeque tofu with collards on the side. As a native Tarheel (North Carolinian) who grew up on this stuff (well, meaty versions, but still) being able to get it without having to cook it myself is just heaven. We ate at another vegan-friendly place yesterday, a funky gamer/computer sort of place called the Backspace, where I had a vegan Philly steak sandwich with some righteous vegan cheeze, and my husband had a vegan club sandwich. Vegan places have exploded around here. For awhile, vegan places were expensive joints that seemed to come and go. Now, though, there are many casual places with reasonable prices. I've been wondering about that. Part of it, I think, is due to a growing number of people like us --old vegetarians who are turning vegan. Paired with all those young people who just go straight to vegan, there's enough of a community here to support several terrific restaurants and pubs. On a different note, I got a different variety of vegan Mozarella at the Food Fight vegan grocery and can't wait to try it. It's called Shreese, from Scotland. At US$7.50, it's a bit pricey, but it looks as if it will cover 2 pizzas. Jo, is this available in your area? Have you tried it? Cheers, Trish
Guest guest
How lucky you are. I'm in So. Cal and you'd think I could find such places, but alas there are very few and none close by.Patricia--- On Sat, 8/15/09, bantrymoon <bantrymoon wrote:bantrymoon <bantrymoon More vegan fun in Portland (OR, USA) Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009, 7:26 PMWe just happened to be near the place Veg News calls Portland's "vegan mini-mall" today when the vegan bakery, SweetPea, was having Donut Day.
