Guest guest
I have never agreed with the way PETA behaves. I dislike their use of nudity and sex, - I see nothing worse about having a fat woman than a supposedly beautiful slim woman though. The fact that they advertise this way is an enduring embarrassment to me, and, at least in this country, does the cause no good whatsoever. Guest guest
As someone that does struggle with weight (in part because of horrible past food choices, in part because of several medications I have to take to survive), I found this ad and their subsequent defense of it particularly offensive. The implication is that fat people (me included) are simply lazy is absurd. And for the record, I may not look good in a bikini, but I can still chase a fricking beach ball (if you haven't a clue what I'm talking about, read PeTA's press release in defense of their ad). My guess is that this will simply hurt their efforts. While I do agree that they have many very valid, very good points, they've also become a lightning rod for controversy and they offend far more people than they attract. Who will they ridicule next? And does my weight issue mean that I can't be vegetarian or vegan anymore <said very tongue in cheek>? They are making themselves irrelevant. Guest guest
I agree with Natasha the claim that PETA makes with that sign is that all vegetarians eat "well" and are automatically slender. Cutting meat out of your diet and even removing animal products is not going to be a miracle solution to every person's weight issues. Vegetarians, like meat eaters are all shapes and sizes. Their implication is ridiculous and just makes vegetarians look stupid and prejudice. NATASHA HARHOLD <greyhounddog Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2009 11:56:27 AMRe: PETA does it again. Guest guest
I am glad more people are seeing PETA in that light now. I have always found their exploits offensive. Guest guest
Oh, geesh. Now that's a good technique for showing our compassion, isn't it? How come this ad shows a fat woman, anyway? Why is it never a fat guy? How many biases can we get out of this ad? PETA can be a mixed blessing. I do like the naked models not wearing fur, or the celebs clothed in vegetables. But they often support more violent and ugly ways to get their point across, such as hitting a teenager in the face with a pie for being crowned " pork queen " in some Iowan contest. And now this disgraceful ad, which disrespects many vegans, including Isa Chandra Moskowitz, who freely admits in her cookbooks that she's a " round " person. I guess it's a good lesson. Self-righteousness can be a double-edged sword, can't it? Cheers, Trish
