Guest guest
(First of all, Jo, about Let the Right One In -- the movie wasn't anything like the book, apparently! It was more just a story of a vampire girl permanently at age 12 seducing a 12-year-old boy into her world. I think I'll skip that book. But the Wexford mysteries are well written and fun to read.) Western Oregon is a treat this time of year. All the apples and pears are ripe, and all the berry plant leaves are turning bright shades of red. The farmers' markets are amazing. Every stand is filled to the brim with squashes, broccoli, greens, and fruit. My local natural foods market, New Seasons, has an annual apple tasting. I go every year and end up taking home bags of heirloom varieties that don't keep very long. I'm forced to eat them, several a day, day after day. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. I've already gotten Ambrosia and Summerfeld apples, both crisp and a little tart, and both incredible. I'm hoping the Elstar apples will be available at the tasting tomorrow. It's a short season, only about 4 weeks, but if there's a better apple than that, I'd love to live in a world where it exists. Get out there, Northern Hemisphere folks, and revel!
