The sweet potato pie recipe at this link calls for 2 cups

sweet potato and ½ c maple syrup.  I cannot find sweet potatoes near my home,

but yams are always available.  Since yams are less sweet, will I need to add

more sweetener to the recipe?

Actually, the veg called " yam " in the northern

hemisphere is in fact " sweet potato. " True (that is,

botanically true, of the genus Dioscorea) yams are almost never

available here.

So yes, use " yams. " I've found all varieties to be very

sweet, so I wouldn't add extra sweetener. You can taste them after

they're cooked and see if you need them to be sweeter. I've found that

roasting or baking, as opposed to boiling or steaming, makes them

taste sweeter (caramelizes or concentrates the natural sugars?).

well, unless you go to speciality markets and the like

:)

yams are the big buggers you sometimes see in the produce section..at least at like berkeley bowl....

you see them in latin american food markets and some asian markets also

but yeah, "american" yams are sweet potatoes

as for cooking with em..never was a big fan of either yams or sweet potatoes, so alas i am of no help whatesoever...

I would probably use the same amount the first time - it may well be sweet

enough.
