Guest guest
I've eaten Green and Blacks organic chocolate bars for a few years. I wait until they're on sale, then buy a few. They last a long time. Since I prefer the darkest of the dark chocolate, and I recalled checking the label when I first bought them, I've been assuming they were still vegan. I'm talking 85 percent cocoa. So imagine my surprise when I happened to read the label the other day and noticed the last ingredient listed was " whole milk solids " ! What could they have been thinking, tainting a perfectly good junk food with ick! milk! But when I looked up the website to register a complaint, I found out http://www.greenandblacks.com/us/information/frequently-asked-questions.html#all\ ergenLabeling that the ingredients hadn't changed, just the labeling. Instead of saying, as many foods do, " may contain traces of x, " they decided that to be honest about the possible presence of allergens, even though their recipe had not changed, they would include milk as an ingredient. So what do you do? Do you continue to support a company that appears to have more integrity than the rest, or do you avoid eating any prepared foods at all (except those produced by vegan companies at vegan manufacturing plants) and avoid eating anyplace but vegan restaurants, because contaminants will inevitably make their way into your food otherwise? And of course there are even contaminants in vegan foods ...
Guest guest
A lot of companies now put this on their labels to safeguard themselves. I support vegan companies a lot, but also buy some of these items. If we don't maybe the companies will just go back to using milk, gelatine etc. etc. Jo , yarrow wrote: > > I've eaten Green and Blacks organic chocolate bars for a few years. Guest guest
I also had this shock a while back when suddenly I saw milk listed as an ingredient. I emailed them and they explained the whole allergen thing and also said that they are working on installing a separate line which will not handle milk products and will be up and working sometime in 2010. I don't know how true this still is, hopefully it will happen and the chocolate will no longer need to be labelled as containing milk. But Divine dark chocolate is divine! It really is and I've mostly moved over to that now.
