My husband and many of my friends have noted that their places of employment

have implemented a " biggest loser " campagne in an effort to contribute to

reducing the obesity epidemic that plagues our country. How do any of these poor

people expect to shed the heart-clogging cellulite when this kind of trash is

being slewn about like confetti, peppering the media. It would be really nice

if, for once, these corporations would take responsibility for themselves and

put disclaimers out there like the alcohol and tobacco industries have to do.

I'd be tickled to see, " Yummy and great tasting blah blah blah. This product can

cause heart disease, diabetes, cancer, tumors, seizures, thyroid disorders,

parasites, depression, attention disorders, eczema, and excess weight gain so

please eat responsibly. "

Hi Katie

It is a shame that these half-truths get published (ice cream does contain

calcium, beef does contain zinc).

I do feel though that it is up to people to find out about what they should and

shouldn't eat. People must take a certain amount of responsibility for what

they do to themselves.

Of course that's true, but often people don't understand that they

have a choice. Everything in mainstream media is slanted in favor of

the corporations that own and advertise in that media. At least 20

years after the Diet for a Small Planet book said you *don't* have to

" balance proteins, " the media is still quoting from the 30-year-old

version and telling veg*ns to be careful to get " enough " protein. In

the U.S., the government's recommendations on nutrition are *still*

heavily influenced by the meatdairy lobbies.

And it's even worse now with the internet, because people can google

sites that support whatever wacky opinion they have or whatever

self-destructive foodlike-substance-eating habit they have. I've

found it's not " safe " to mention veganism on other lists or forums

because invariably some wapf troll will start ranting.

Anyway, it's a good thing that this list exists.

I used to feel this way about many areas of concern to me in my life.

When I was having my babies I couldn't believe how many other pregnant

women were so naive about the physiology of their own bodies, not to

mention the myriad of choices they would have to face once that baby was

born. None of these women had researched their doctors or hospitals,

none had delved into the controversy surrounding circumcision,

immunizations, and formula. Likewise, they had no clue of the dangers

posed by the chemicals present in the products they were about to use on

their beautiful newborns: BP-A, disposable diapers, diaper cream, sun

screen, baby wash, etc. The problem is that these people have placed ALL

their faith in their almighty doctors who are just as naive and

ignorant. The medical profession as a whole is controlled by such

entities as the CDC and FDA which are funded by the pharmacutical

industry and the industry that mass-produces toxic food. I feel this way

about food, hygeine products, household cleaners, religion, politics,

education, toys, television content, medicine, global warming, etc. The

list is only limited by my imagination.

I couldn't understand why or how anyone could possibly believe that

these institutions still provide unbiased protection to us. But then it

was pointed out to me that not everyone is set up to be analytical and

suspicious. Nor do they even know how to research these topics. We are

the people who take responsibility for our own lives, from our health to

the businesses to which we choose to give our money. There are a few

people who are close to me who rely on me to research points of interest

to them. And I oblige because I believe that everyone should at least

sample a taste the forbidden fruit of knowledge. On the bright side,

natural selection will eventually eliminate those who are incapable of

taking responsibility for themselves by way of cancers and diseases.

Unfortunately it may take a while.

Sorry about the can of worms. These subjects are a source of passion for

me, LOL.

the problem i see it tho is, its an overload on folks. the media is constantly full of "this is bad for you! don't eat it!no, a new studdy sez widgets are actually good for!todays top story, eating widgets linked to possible toenail cancerthis just in, widgets are a great source of vitamin W and titanium, now here's Bill with the action weather forecast"

all you need is one lobby funded "study" to throw the whole ball of wax into turmoil.

IMO, most ppl just want to eat what they like, and don't want to think about it overly. if it was bad for you, well, then the government would do something about it. and they move on.

I guess it is different here in the UK. Although there is a

bias in the media there is plenty of information available.

I feel like lately there has been more negativity on this stream of emails. Certainly dairy and animal products aren't as good for you as delicious fresh veggies and complex carbs mmm, but let's not go over board and promote bad dietary habits. Eating too little can be just as detrimental as eating the wrong types of foods. Often skipping meals can be even more dangerous. My boyfriend stuffs his face with all the meat and poultry he can get his hands on and he is in great shape because he eats enough for him and exercises. True who knows what his arteries look like haha, but the point is he's got tons of energy, feels great, and doesn't look too shabby either :-p. The point is personally I don't eat animal products because I don't believe they're good for me or anyone else, but I don't

deprive myself of the food that I love and think is alright for me. I don't think anyone should. Take care of yourselves and eat clean! fraggle <EBbrewpunx Sent: Mon, February 15, 2010 12:15:37 PMRe: Re: 5 Bad Foods That are Actually Healthy on Health

Fraggle's joke was funny. A little humor is necessary in the Vegan chat. Veganism is a serious subject because the people of this world are eating millions of murdered animals every day. Humor is good and hard to find in the vegan environment. Surely you don't think Fraggle was promoting starvation? Lighten up, we're all on the same side, right?........--- On Mon, 2/15/10, Sarah Tomecek <sarah.tomecek wrote:

Fraggle's joke was funny. A little humor is necessary in the Vegan chat. Veganism is a serious subject because the people of this world are eating millions of murdered animals every day. Humor is good and hard to find in the vegan environment. Surely you don't think Fraggle was promoting starvation? Lighten up, we're all on the same side, right?........--- On Mon, 2/15/10, Sarah Tomecek <sarah.tomecek wrote:

The point is personally I don't eat animal products because I don't believe they're good for me or anyone else, but I don't deprive myself of the food that I love and think is alright for me. I don't think anyone should. Take care of yourselves and eat clean!

My husband and many of my friends have noted that their places of employment have implemented a "biggest loser" campagne in an effort to contribute to reducing the obesity epidemic that plagues our country. How do any of these poor people expect to shed the heart-clogging cellulite when this kind of trash is being slewn about like confetti, peppering the media. It would be really nice if, for once, these corporations would take responsibility for themselves and put disclaimers out there like the alcohol and tobacco industries have to do. I'd be tickled to see, "Yummy and great tasting blah blah blah. This product can cause heart disease, diabetes, cancer, tumors, seizures, thyroid disorders, parasites, depression, attention disorders, eczema, and excess weight gain so please eat responsibly. Of course I agree we're all on the same side. I wasn't just addressing fraggle there was some criticism of another vegan chatters diet being too hefty earlier by someone else. I'm just saying we need to promote healthy eating and celebrate our good choices too. EC <emgarri Sent: Tue, February 16, 2010

Hi

I think you have misunderstood the humour in Fraggles post. Fraggle likes food

as much as I do. but he has been very busy lately.

I don't wish to be confrontational, but apart from whether or not meat is

healthy I really think it is ethically wrong to eat it unless there is no other

way to survive.

I agree it is good to promote healthy eating and I would always encourage people

to eat properly - but some people are vegan for no other reason than that they

do not want to eat another being.
