The past few years, I've been out in the wind and rain storms protecting my tomato plants until the end of May. I plant as early as March, even though the "recommended" planting time is mid-May. One year I even lost a 4-ft tomato plant to wind and overnight freezing temperatures in mid-April. The main difference this year is that we've had fewer (and cooler) heat waves; 2-3 years ago we had heat waves the middle of every month from Feb. to May. A year or two ago we had more severe storms, with compost-bin lids tossed 20 ft. away and branches of my perennial kale broken. A decade or two ago, when I was getting everywhere on bicycle, I noticed that it rained mostly overnight, so that I rarely had to pack serious raingear and recall only one day when I came home soaked. In the past few years, we've had a lot of days with serious pelting rain all day. More days of consecutive precipitation, too. Guest guest Posted April 14, 2010 Report Share Posted April 14, 2010 Hi Fraggle It's strange how the weather trends differ. We had about ten years of the weather being different to the previous patterns. This year we have gone back to what has previously been considered the English weather pattern i.e. still getting frosts. Luckily we don't seem to have had so much rain this April.
