Guest guest
When I go to a restaurant that does not have a lot on the menu I will ask what they suggest for a vegan or vegetarian depending on how I am eating. I think it is important to celebrate and go out with people whether they share the same eating habits as me. When I went to Capital Grill with my office I was surprised when I asked what they suggest, they had a citrus glazed tofu with veggies that was very good. When it is your birthday and you get to pick you can go to a vegetarian restaurant with the whole family. In a message dated 4/23/2010 5:50:12 P.M. Guest guest
We are new vegans going on 9 months or so. My family are not and not even close! We have always celebrated birthdays together but since changing to vegan it has been a BIG struggle. Not sure how to handle the situation. Last time I went to a steakhouse was at the beginning of the vegan journey and I had a sweet potato. But now pretty much my hubby and kids are vegan with my oldest son and hubby pretty much vegetarian. So it will be more difficult now since they will want more than a sweet potato. Just not sure how to handle it. Blessings, Mikki www.funder5.blogspot.com

Guest guest
I wouldn't trust that onion, find out what it's frid 9in, it's very greasy for a main meal, get a salad and take a bottle of vegan dressing with you, maybe some veggies on the side but when I went the veggies had seasoned butter or a thin sauce on them. Guest guest
I would eat before you go. It doesn't look good for a vegetarian let alone a vegan. Check out their site (I assume it's the correct one). http://www.outback.com/index.aspx It looks like you might be stuck with a potato or sweet potato or maybe fresh vegetables (depending on how they are prepared). Good luck, Paula
Guest guest
The blooming onion would have egg or milk in the batter and the Outback information says to avoid anything fried, as it will be cross contaminated. Ginger

Guest guest
I go to Outback a lot with family and never have a problem. Usually get a baked sweet potato, side of steamed broccoli, brown bread, and it is delicious...sometimes a small salad, too...or sliced tomatoes. Guest guest
In all seriousness, I would eat a huge vegan meal right before the event, then at the Outback, perhaps get a token salad, so as not to risk offending the hosts. They do have an item which is called, I believe, Seasonal Veggies, but I wouldn't be surprised if those are cooked near the meats. You could ask them to cook them on a separate grill where they won't be in contact with meatie stuff. Personally, there's not a single chain of restaurants which I trust to provide truly vegan food. Just my 2 cents worth.Good Luck!MatthewUnitarian-Universalists are often asked where they stand. Guest guest
No help from me. Every time I've checked the menu, they had NOTHING for me. Nada.At best you can eat a salad without cheese nor meat and have a glass of water. Were it me, I'd kindly explain to my dad that there's no way I can eat there. I can't imagine my parents taking me to eat somewhere I can't eat, and if they were that stuck on going they'd more than understand if I refused to go. Guest guest
Blue Rose,I would respectfully disagree with your solution, because:A) The dinner is NOT about Mikki, it's about her Mom (and Dad). Mikki's the one who needs to make the accomodations for herself, not mom or dad. B) To ask her parents to change the venue, when, apparently, Outback is one of her mom's favorite places to eat, is unreasonable. Again, the onus is on Mikki to figure out a way for this to work for herself, not for her parents to accomodate her veganism. C). She risks antagonizing her parents around what should be a joyous occasion for her mom if she bitches and moans too much about it, rather than working out a solution on her own.I'm 100% with you on Outback having nil to eat for vegans. Even the " vegetarian " offerings would likely be tainted with meat. Namaste,MatthewUnitarian-Universalists are often asked where they stand. Guest guest
I agree - if it is a special celebration for your mum and dad it is best to go to the restaurant they have chosen. Phone them beforehand to check on whether the vegetables are suitable for vegans (no animal fat) and ask if they can do you a vegan meal. If not, as was suggested, eat before you go and have a light salad. Mainly though - make it a happy occasion. Guest guest
I realize I probably was raised in a VERY different culture from you.In my family's culture, it's not just about the mom and dad--it's about the entire family. My parents would NEVER ask me to just make accommodations for myself. The same scenario would go in reverse. You don't force a person in your family to go to a place you KNOW they can't eat at for any occasion. It's unthinkable. It means you can't feed them, and it's akin to being a bad host. I'm guessing you people have very, very different relationships with your family than I do. Not bad, just very different. On Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 3:13 PM, Matthew McCormick <mattmcco wrote: Blue Rose,I would respectfully disagree with your solution, because:A) The dinner is NOT about Mikki, it's about her Mom (and Dad). Guest guest
Wow! I have never encountered that kind of culture. Even when I ate at a relative's house, it was clear that I was the outlier and that no special accommodations would be made for me. So there was meat broth in the rice, mayo on the salads, butter in the overcooked vegs, etc. That's the way they always made it, and if I didn't want to eat their food, too bad. It was the same when I worked at a job where 3-4 of us got treated to a lunch on rare occasions. I remember going to a French restaurant where the only thing on the menu that I could eat was a simple green salad (iirc, 2 lettuce leaves) with no dressing. So I've learned to always carry food with me, to eat before a big dinner, etc. But choices at some restaurants have become a little better over the past couple decades or so, and some relatives have started eating healthier as well.
