Thank you for this Jo. Alarming that there is so little content, it did not take me long to read the whole lot! What a shame the Green Party stands so little chance of getting far, we can hope they get in in Brighton Pavilion and possibly in one other seat. they should be the largest party.

I am very fearful of what the Tories may do if they get in, we can only hope for a hung parliament, or a coalition, a more positive term!

I am new to this group, hello to all from Cornwall, UK, where the sun is just trying to peep out, after many days into weeks of sunny weather, we have finally had some rain.

I am interested in the debate between welfarists and abolitionists, I think I am more with the abolitionists, but the term is initially a bit off putting. Gary Francione has come in for some stick by people of all views, as he appears to be rather elitist from what I can understand, not tolerating any views other than his own. I may be wrong, and look forward to hearing people's views.

I look forward to getting to know this group.

best wishes,

Vanessa

This really has to be the most confused website I've ever come across - it seems to have taken all those things that it thinks people won't like, stuck them in a bowl, and attacked them with a large egg whisk.

They seem to think that the Bilderberg Group is a Freemasonic cabal, and that the EU is synonymous with the Bilderberg Group. Now I agree there is something very concerning about the Bilderberg Group - but a lot of its members have nothing whatsoever to do with Freemasonry, and a lot more have nothing whatsoever to do with Europe or the EU - for a start most top American politicians!

Hi Vanessa - good to see you here. Welcome to Vegan Chat.

For the Group - Vanessa runs a vegetarian guesthouse in Cornwall - our favourite

place to go - we have spent many happy weekends there.

I have been off work for several days with a really bad heady cold, so am just

catching up with the moderating and reading of posts.

It is a shame the Green Party don't stand much chance - and I certainly couldn't

vote Conservative because they will bring back hunting with hounds. A hung

parliament would probably be the best outcome we can hope for.

I must admit that I don't know much about Gary Francione apart from the fact

that he is an abolitionist - I will read up on him and hopefully be able to

comment later.

The weather is still lovely in Surrey although we did have heavy rain one night

- but luckily it had stopped by the morning. We are still getting frosts most

mornings though.

Like me, my Green Party candidate in Chester is a cyclist and I think a vegan,

or at least veggie. Sadly, the city is likely to fall to the Tories especially

after Gordan's bigoted gaffe today. Liberal or Labour - ummm. At least I know

Christine Russell, the sitting Labour MP and she is animal friendly even if she

eats them. Aarrrggh.

Maybe we should all move to an isolated spot and take over local government

there. Hey didn't that kind of happen in Macchynleth a few years ago?

Hi Jo and all,

thank you! Hope you are on the mend now from your cold Jo.

I have been fascinated by the story of the meal out with family someone is going on. The responses demonstrate such cultural diversity and varied expectations. We have had several excellent meals out in pubs in the area, they are often delighted to try out new things, so long as they are given warning. but, if the restaurant is part of a chain, this may of course be harder. Fortunately, in my family, the non vegetarians are the unusual ones, and now the proportion of vegans is rising as well!

I think a brief summary of Gary Francione and other abolitionist's views is to say that animals are here for their own purposes and not for ours, and that any use of animals, for food or entertainment etc., is an abuse. They suggest that welfare organisations, e.g. Compassion in World Farming (or equivalent US organisations), are extending and increasing animals' suffering by trying to improve conditions of animals and thus ameliorate people's guilt about eating/using animals and their products and therefore risking increasing that use. I hope someone will put me right if I have got that wrong, but I find it a very interesting debate. whichever route you take there are lots of difficult questions left hanging. Presumably, abolitionists would not condone Guide dogs, our dog is a visiting Pets as therapy dog in a care home, arghh, difficult subject!
