Guest guest
Everyone must be busy again. I went to a concert (Hammerfall) last night in Camden town, so I still have lots of music going through my brain :-) What is everyone reading/listening to at present. I have just read and thoroughly enjoyed a book by Phil Rickman called Tears of Angels, and am about to start the next in the series. I have been listening to Hammerfall (obviously) and Avantasia, Rhapsody (and Christopher Lee). Jo

Guest guest
So, how is "The Carrie Diaries"? I've had little to no time to read, but I have a stack (somewhere) that I hope to get to sometime. We have started a major remodel and my house is in complete chaos. I have many books....no idea where they are. Two weekends ago, I was in Virginia Beach with my son for a fencing tournament. Last weekend, fencing here in Chicago and three shows of "Whose Live Anyway". I love Jeff Davis. This weekend, just fencing and baseball, and going to see the newest "baby" addition to our family. Also, been really busy with rehabbing wildlife....spring and all. Had a baby bunny and baby squirrel, both of which didn't make it, so I was really down for a few days. The baby robin...Batman...is doing well. Hopefully, he'll be released in a few weeks. In a week or so, the phone calls for baby raccoons will start and that will break my heart because I know I have to say no this season. My house is just way too chaotic this year and I have too much going on with my son and baby coonies stay until the fall before release and I know I just can't do it.As for music, I'm listening to almost anything and everything. My iPod is sitting here waiting for new music. Must get busy!!!Oh, BTW, Missie, how's the gym going??? I joined LA Fitness about two months ago as well. Was working out a lot until the VA trip and haven't been back since. Need to fit it in again. OH, saw Iron Man 2 last night at midnight. Very good. Guest guest
I am reading a book called Emperor The Gates of Rome, which is pretty out of the ordinary for me because since I was 13 I have been an avid romance novel reader. That makes ten years of a serious addiction! I haven't had a lot of time to get into it because I'm working and I can't seem to find the time or energy to pick up the book. Nonetheless, it's been really interesting and I've always enjoyed Roman History. I have been listening to Missy Higgins a lot. She's got such a soulful voice and I really love that type of sound. Also, there have been a lot of broadway musical songs in my life. Love! Just saw In the Heights with a couple of girlfriends, which I liked, though not one of my favorites. Finally, I have been jamming out to country and 80s rock. Wow I have random taste in music. :-pfraggle <EBbrewpunx Sent: Fri, May 7, 2010 1:10:05 PMRe: Oh so quiet.... Guest guest
I always have to have a book on the go, even if just to send me off to sleep! i am currently enjoying the novels of Erica James, she writes well, they are entertaining and just right to read at bedtime! Not good to send me to sleep is 'Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows' by Melanie Joy which I am also currently reading. I have to read it in small bites, it is very full of important information, but also quite distressing. I think everyone should read it. it introduces the concept of 'carnism' - the idea that meat eating is a choice, it is not essential, but most people have never thought about it, or named it before. I am also reading 'How to get things done' by Richard Templar. I commented on Facebook, 'I am reading, 'How to get things done', rather than getting things done!' Returning to the earlier topic of abolitionism, I wonder what other group members think about this? Is anyone a close follower of Gary Francione? does anyone disagree with his thinking? as a newish vegan, i am very interested in people's thinking around veganism and all that goes with it. i am coming to the view that the dietary part is just the start, the simplest bit, but that there is so much more I am only dabbling in so far... ---
Guest guest
I can hardly let this topic / off topic go without mentioning the difficulty of promoting veganism / vegetarianism in literature. Publishers get the jitters if a main character is vegan unless they are stereotypical skinny and nerdy. Consequently I used stealth characterisation in Exit, Pursued by a Bee. The fiesty woman protagonist is vegan but her food choices are snuck in... Guest guest
Hi Geoff and all, I was only yesterday thinking that there are not many leading characters in books I read who are vegetarian or vegan, and that this is surely a way to bring the topic further into the mainstream. Interesting, therefore, to read of your experience as an author in having difficulty gaining acceptance by publishers for books in which vegetarian or vegan characters are other than 'skinny and nerdy'. I shall look out for your books, thank you, although they are not in my usual genre... On the earlier topic of the Steakhouse meal in US, what happened? I assume it has been and gone by now, it would be great to hear what you ate? Best wishes, Vanessa - Geoff Sunday, May 09, 2010 1:42 AM Re: Oh so quiet.... Guest guest
I'm reading a book called Lily Dale about a community in New York that started back in the 1800s when the spiritualism movement was sweeping the country. I visited it last October when I was in Pennsylvania, but it was after Labor Day and there wasn't anything going on. Guest guest
I have finished the Phil Rickman book that I mentioned - thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm half way through the next one of his now, and also enjoying it. Unfortunately most of his seem to be very difficult to get. I like reading Joanne Harris, Ann Cleeves, Nicci French and Susan Hill.
