Guest guest
CONGRATULATIONS to The San Francisco Vegetarian Society from John Davis <vegweb The International Vegetarian Union Council has voted for the 40th IVU World Veg Congress to be held in October 2012 in San Francisco. It will be hosted by the San Francisco Vegetarian Society at the San Francisco County Fair Building in the Golden Gate Park. SFVS was founded in 1968 and joined IVU the same year. Their president,Dixie Mahy, was a speaker way back at the 1975 IVU Congress in Maine - the first to be held in North America - where she also performed a dance and chaired a plenary session. We have a long history together. They have been celebrating World Vegetarian Day since 1988 with a two day celebration in the Golden Gate Park the past five years. Dixie had a hand in the original decision to have a WORLD VEGETARIAN DAY on October 1st. Last year, there were 5,500 attendees, 33 speakers and over 70 exhibitors. These days SFVS has a very lively program of activities and recently persuaded the city Board of Supervisors to launch the first 'meat free monday' in North America. The first IVU World Veg Congress was in Dresden, Germany, in 1908 and they've been held every 2 or 3 years since then. At the 1913 Congress in the Netherlands, a visitor from San Francisco invited the delegates to hold the WVC in conjunction with the SF World's Fair in 1915. But the Europeans thought it was too far to go and voted for Paris, France, in 1916...which of course was cancelled due to the First World War. More info will be at www.ivu.org/congress2012 as it becomes available.
Guest guest
Wow, this is very interesting news and I hope I can attend. I’m just in the throws of getting an old motorhome and perhaps I could make the trip down in 2012. I had no idea they had vegetarian conferences and especially going back that far. I’d love to become involved with an organization like that. " -Margaret Mead I am sometimes asked " Why do you spend so much of your time and money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to men? " I answer: " I am working at the roots. " George T. Angell, 1823-1909 " We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
