Nancy, do your dachshunds try to chase chickens? Just curious... My mom's

little one, Oscar (he came with that name!) killed two of my parakeets once.

They seem like they could be predatory little things, the way Oscar hunts

for chipmunks... :)

Ah, Audrey.......dachshunds are hunting dogs and if they can get to their prey,

they will definitely chase and kill it.

Our dachshunds cannot get to where my chickens are kept. I have had dachshunds

over the years that would not bother any of the chickens but that was quite a

while back. All of the dachshunds we have now would chase them if they could.

Now, our long coated Chihuahua can go out with the chickens and does not pay

them the least bit of attention to them but the big rooster will attack Rascal

if he is not put into the chicken house when Rascal is out among them. There

are even a few hens that will lower their heads and chase him!

We have had to take two dachshunds, at two different times, to the vet for

poisonous snake bites and they have attacked both a skunk and a opossum that got

into the yard. You can see why they are classified as hunting dogs. I have

been had dachshunds since I was a child and while I love all dogs and animals,

dachshunds are my favorite dog breed.

That's what I thought! They're lucky they're cute and cuddly, aren't they??

:) I know a lot of people who have grown up with dachshunds and just love

them -- a lady I work with just got her 4th or 5th (in her lifetime)

dachshund from a shelter. I can't blame Oscar for killing those parakeets,

he was just doing what he was made to do.

My chihuahua loves to aggravate the parrot by barking at her when she's on

the floor (where he doesn't think she should be), but he's smart enough to

ignore the Canadian geese that frequent our apartment complex. Now, if a

rottweiler wandered into HIS apartment complex, he would go after a

rottweiler, absolutely -- and the rottweiler would probably turn tail and

run for its life. I like that chihuahuas are as cuddly as dachshunds but

really have no desire to kill things (can you tell the chihuahua is my

favorite dog breed? I had one growing up, and my mom had one when she was

growing up, too!)

I would really enjoy chickens -- I love birds of all kinds. Maybe someday.

:)
