They are hounds, they hunt, howls, dig holes and hate being left alone.

Pretzel was able to open the hampster ball and did my hampster in within 3 mins

while I ran to answer the phone.  Rusty did the same thing to Mom's canary and

Bumper Ruggles was a mini doxie and he tore up yards of carpet trying to open

the front door.  I have had these gogs for years and every single one was full

of love and just and much badness.  LOL

Nancy, do your dachshunds try to chase chickens? Just curious... My mom's

little one, Oscar (he came with that name!) killed two of my parakeets once.

They seem like they could be predatory little things, the way Oscar hunts

for chipmunks... :)

Oh, but they snuggle so sweetly! :) Oscar " tee peed " the living room when he

was a puppy -- liked nothing better than to find an unattended roll of

toilet paper.... In his old age (he is 10) he has started howling when the

other dogs bark (guess it's easier than barking??)

I will never have another dachshund or any terrier-type dog -- they want too

much to kill my birds. I love greyhounds and mini greyhounds, but they are

predatory dogs as well. My chihuahua is very good around the birds, and so

was the border collie I fostered for several months. My sister's pug behaves

very well at my house, too -- ignores the birds.

Donna, you'll like this, you know parrots -- my red lored amazon, Goldie,

has trained the cats and dog to run when she is on the floor. :)

They are indeed little stinkers! I have never had one that howled on a

regular basis.....only when prompted with singing or a musical instrument

playing but they do LOVE to dig holes trying to catch the stupid moles that

insist on inhabiting our yard. I don't think there is any way to break a

dachshund from digging except to get rid of the critters that live underground.

Luckily I am home during the day and they all get a lot of attention but do seem

to do alright when we are gone for the day mainly because they have each other

for company.

When I was growing up, Fritz, our little red dachshund, would turn over

trashcans, and tear up all kinds of things when he was left alone during the

day.....and they didn't have the good, wire dog crates then like they do now.

Fritz got into plenty of trouble but we loved him anyway. He lived for 17

years and always thought he was a human!
