I saw Quorn products at the grocery store today. I wasn't sure what it was. What

does it taste like?

Quorn is a wonderful thing! The texture is firmer than most soy products,

which I like. The taste of the chik'n cutlets is as close to chicken as I

think I've had (but keep in mind I haven't had chicken in almost 3 years).

The meatballs are fantastic. My favorite is the garlic and herb breaded

chik'n cutlets, which take care of my (rare) fried chicken cravings.

Definitely worth a taste. :)

Here's a link to their site http://www.quorn.us/ It's made from a mushroom

protein but is not mushroomy at all, in taste or texture.

It's been a very long time since I had chicken, but from what I remember...it's

just like chicken.

There is a plain " cutlet " style, which doesn't have a lot of flavor...great if

you have your own sauce, spices, etc. that you like.

The " chicken nuggets " and other varieties taste just like chicken.

Quorn is fabulous, the Quorn Meatballs are a favorite of my non-veggie friends.

Sometimes I make them with a coconut milk and curry sauce, sometimes with a

onion gravy (great for grits and gravy), and they even go great with bar-b-que

sauce.

I also love the crumbles for making burritos, tacos, and empanadas. I am not big

on processed foods, but I really like Quorn products.

My daughter's friend loves the Quorn Chicken Nuggets I try to keep a box in the

freezer for her so when she comes over. She is a meat and potatoes farm girl,

but she likes the Quorn so much that it is her " special food " (that and fried

green tomatoes) for when she visits.

I would reccomend trying the crumbles first, they season up very well, and the

texture is nicer (to me) than soy crumbles. I don't think you will be

disappointed.

Debbie,

They have a savory flavor but it isn't exactly like chicken.  It's flavorful,

but somewhat bland.

What I do is brown it (the cutlets, for example) in a skillet with several herbs

that I would use to " flavor up " almost anything (including chicken, if I WERE

eating it).  I think it's the combination of the seasonings and the " browning "

that gives it a sort-of chickeny flavor...

I have also added a little water to the browning cutlets and have come up with a

fairly nice " broth " .

Same thing with the meatballs--I brown them and then ADD more seasonings,

according to how I like the flavors to be emphasized:

basil/oregano/rosemary/garlic...some onion...if I am going to serve them in a

spaghetti sauce over pasta, for example.  I have not eaten them

" un-doctored-up " , so I don't think they have a really strong flavor of anything

particular--much.  There is a LITTLE flavoring in there, but it's just enough to

make it pleasant and not

totally flat.  The herbs added to the meatballs and whatever herbs are in the

other foods are mainly the flavoring agents.

All the ingredients are listed on the package, so you can see.  If you were to

buy products of a similar type, but made with soy protein (like Morningstar

Farms or Boca products), you would likely get similar flavorings.

What I think sets the Quorn products apart is not so much the flavor (which I do

like), but the firmer, chewier texture.  The food has a sort of

" fiber-like "  chewiness that is similar in texture to meats.  I like some of the

soy-based food products (Boca/Morninstar Farms, e.g.,) but the soy-foods usually

are sort of spongy in texture (as is tofu, even when frozen and thawed, IMHO).

The Quorn has a firmer texture than soy products and that is what I like about

them.  I also feel I can eat them with confidence, knowing they don't have corn

syrup, corn oil or " HFC " or anything like that--which I totally try to avoid,

for health reasons.

The ingredients and flavorings, seasonings are all listed, so you can check them

to see if there is something there that you don't want.

Best regards,

Agree with Laura! I have thawed, breaded, and fried the naked cutlets like I

used to do with *chicken*, but not often. The naked ones don't have much

flavor, I usually use them in casseroles where I also add McKay's

chicken-like seasoning (vegetarian). Now, the garlic herb breaded ones (that

come already breaded) have such a nice flavor that I eat those just with a

fork and a vegetable on the side. Also good are the ones with gruyere

cheese, I eat them by themselves, too. Those are a special treat! :)
