question on protein

Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can answer a question on protein for me or guide me to a

source or a link for the answers.

My friend (age late 60's) went through a quadruple bypass 1 year ago, is

also a diabetic, she wears an insulin machine, and has started a vegetarian diet

for the last 3 weeks and is loving it. She claims she feels wonderful.

She went to her cardiac class today where they do exercises and learn

about nutrition and how to eat to protect the heart. She told the nutritionist

about her new way of life and she had a fit. She claims she was a vegetarian

and vegan for a time but returned to eating meat now and proceeded to tell my

friend she had to watch the amount of protein she was eating because protein

makes the kidneys work harder and that is not good for her. So my question is

............ is the protein you get in vegetables the same kind of protein that

is in meat? Is this really harmful to the kidneys?

Thanks in advance for any help

I think your friend needs to get a second opinion from another

nutritionist....or a dietician (I believe there is a difference in the two

specialties). Diabetics are supposed to be aware of the amount of protein they

eat.

A diet that is very high in protein can cause the kidneys to work harder to

excrete extra protein. But, I have always believed that the smartest way to

eat is to eat anything you do eat in moderation.

Still, if I were your friend, I would get a second opinion.
