Guest guest
Start at your local library, before you buy (or instead of buying). I like: * saving dinner the vegetarian way by leanne ely (a fly lady) * fresh from the vegetarian slow cooker by robin robertson * vegan with a vengence by isa chandra moskovitz * anything by drena burton or nava atlas ________________________________ Dena Deen <tigriss007 Sun, January 31, 2010 11:24:34 AM [veg_grp] Vegetarian Cookbook Recommendations  Ok, all of this talk about the Veganomicon cook book has peaked my interest, so I went and looked it up at Amazon and fould loads of pics of people's creations using this book. I am going to buy it, but also thought about buying to for the free shipping. That leads me to ask, what other vegetarian cook books are so wonderful? I'm not Vegan, but don't oppose any wonderful cookbook!! Please send in your recommendations so I can eat more!!  Thanks-a-bunch! Guest guest
Thanks. I have tried the local library and wasn't to thrilled with their very small selection. This is a meat and potato part of the state, so in a small rural library you don't find too much of a selection. I did check out the Vegan with a Vegance and that one lookds great too. Guest guest
Dena, Check with your local thrift store. That is where I get all my Vegetarian cook books. If you have an ARC they are the best. I have some treasures that I've paid only $2. I've seen Vegan books too. So beautifully illustrated, and with amazing recipes. However, two of my favorite cookbooks are Mexican and Chinese and neither are Vegetarian. I can adjust any recipe to fit my lifestyle. Guest guest
Also see if the library is affiliated with others in the area and will do interbranch loans. This way you will have access to far more choices and usually the wait is only a few days from request to when your branch has the book in. Guest guest
I love all the Moosewood Restaurant ckbks, and have a collection of them. I just got the new one, Cooking for Health, but have not made my way through it yet. I do like their Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home. I also like Debbie Madison and Mark Bittmans vege books. Fun!! Enjoy the day! Cheryl
Guest guest
Thanks for all the help ya'll. I decided on the Veginocom, Moosewood Restraunt, and several Vegetarian Times cookbooks. I got all of them from half.com for super cheap when compared to Amazon and they are being recycled to a better home instead of sitting on a shelf going to waste. Thanks for all of the suggestions on my new cookbooks, all 7 of them. I'm ready and set to cook away! Guest guest
I don't care for the Moosewood series, those recipes are time consuming and too many steps that aren't necessary, they just aren't my thing. I love all the Vegetarian Times cookbooks and there's a fabulous Lean and " Luscious Meatless cookbook you can get used for almost nothing and it will be your favorite in no time. I love Passionate Vegetarion too. If you want vegetarian Mexican food look for Kippy Nigh's Mexican Vegetarian Cookbook, I have some of her recipes in the files, it is fantastic. Guest guest
I dont have any specific cookbooks to recommend - but I love to get a variety at the library! I get many cookbooks at a time, and go through them and flag the recpes that I think my family will like and either make copies of them or write down the ones that we tried and liked! --- On Tue, 2/2/10, Mike Christie <mike wrote: Mike Christie <mike Re: [veg_grp] Vegetarian Cookbook Recommendations Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 12:29 AM That would be: A Taste of Mexico: Vegetarian Cuisine (Healthy World Cuisine) by Kippy Nigh Book Publishing Company It really is excellent. Guest guest
I'm really enjoying ExtraVeganZa by Laura Matthias. I think the Spinach Orange Yam Soup was wonderful, and the Lavender Chocolate Chip Cookies are amazing. The dough is a bit difficult to work with, but the results are outstanding. It's my new signature dish. I've also made her pumpkin seed yam pate and shepherd's pie, both of which were very good. My only complaint with the book is you have to have some cooking sense to use it, so if you're a beginning cook, this is not the book for you. For example, she ignores an important convention when listing the ingredients, listing things like " 2 cups broccoli, chopped, " which should really read " 2 cups chopped broccoli. " But if you can deal with that, go for it. I'm really loving this cookbook. And if you make the shepherd's pie, use 1 1/2 pounds of potatoes instead of 4 medium-large ones.
